Why would you use anything other than thumbies?

Got a great pair of thumbies last night to replace an old gripsh*t 8 speed and rapidfire unit on my proflex.

I am not the best mechanic in the world and I did intend to offer both of these units to anyone that wanted them (gratis) however no-one will want what remains now!

Why are both these units considered an improvment on thumbies? Gripshift and rapidfire seem just to complex to maintain with ease, the amount of parts in the rapidfire was scary.

Why have all of the added complexity when you can have a simple, effective and lets face it, prettier alternative?

Thumbies rule. :D

thumbies do rule. i just leave them in friction for that "bolt on and go" funtime effect. my indexing never worked anyway,

We haven't the industry has said this is what you going to use. I like both. my XT unders are crap but my XTR unders are great. XCPro thumies BITD were great. plus had a non-index mode which was a good option.
The the big S said this is what you (us) want. And there you go

I'm on the dark side then cus I dont prefer thumbies.

I'll get my coat now shall I.......

M900 RF+ are my shifters of choice.

On the road STI is the greatest thing ever! SO much better than down tube shifters. Off road I can see the argument for simple and effective though.

not that many parts in gripshift... :? Just a metal spring.

Not used thumbies in sooooooo long I can barely remember. Must try again soon though as I think I would prefer them to STI type contraptions.

By thumbies, I assume you mean Paul's Thumbies?

If you are referring to the Shimano/Suntour period correct variety...those are thumb shifters.

Absolutely anything is better than GripShift. I don't know how anyone can stand it.

Personally, I like my XT thumb shifters as much as my M900...but I see what you're gettin' at.

i have used rapid fire for years but was previously a thumbshifter fan, but i recently got some nos deore thumbies for my older clockwork, it's nice to get your whole hand on the lever at the end of a longer ride.

always hated gripshi(t)ft! biggest pile of sloppy shifting cack i have ever seen! don't even like their newer stuff (mechs aswel) even though it's rapifire-ish. it all looks and feels to mechanical if you know what i mean, prefer the older smoother looking mechs from shimano and like xtr 952 shifters.

Never liked gripshift or the original RF. RF+ and Thumbies are definitely where it's at... not sure which I'd choose if pushed!

The best option's clearly 'none' though :P
