They do it because they don't want to spend any money on a bike. They don't go to a proper cycle shop and get good advice. What they think they wanted was a mountain bike, what they should have is a sit up and beg hybrid.

There's a guy I see locally that's got long, curved bar ends pointing straight back at himself, using the flat bits as handlebars.

Seems to be because he's too fat to reach the bars, no idea how he stops :shock:
