Why do I prefer larger frames?

Re:

To be honest, the top pic doesn't look like 57, looks more like 54ish, but I'm not there to measure it. The bottom one definitely looks too small

THose peugeots look to be far smaller than 52/57. Either that or a) the saddles too low or b) they just have *really* short top tubes.

Are you sure you're 5'7"?

Re:

Interesting!

Yes, I'm fairly sure. I'm used to metric units, so I'd normally say I'm 1.7m, but here in the UK I'm 5'7 :)

The size of the frame is measured from the crank to the top of the seat tube, right? Seat post not included obviously

From another thread about bikes being too small

https://www.mbr.co.uk/news/size-matters ... all-321374

This is a great article I picked up on a while back. I’ve always ridden mtb a frame size over what’s “right”, I also get on with road bikes larger than what’s recommended. I think this article and his other sums up pretty well, at least in mtb terms anyway that swapping of components to get the right fit really isn’t the way things should be done.

Depends, some measure centre to centre. Some go centre to top.
Makes 2~3 cm difference.

Which is why i mentioned stack and reach. Far more important.

Re:

Double checked the frame size and it is indeed a 57cm.

I will look the other measurements you mentioned but yes, I agree that frame size alone doesn't tell much. It's useful to compare models of different sizes, maybe.

I haven't read the article about MTB yet but I sure will.
In that case I tend to prefer smaller frames or the pedals are too far forward for me to efficiently put strength on them.
I think my Marin is a 19" or 20" and it's waaay too big for me.

Re:

Doubt, doubt, I'm doubting myself.
You say centre to centre, but I do centre of crank to top of seat tube. So, centre to top...

I have to say I bought it as a 56cm, so the previous owner was measuring very close to what I get. I guess he measured to the top tube, I also include the tiny bit of the vertical tube.

As others have said, you can make most bikes fit within reason. I’m about the same size as you and have a 54 Modern bike and a 55 vintage bike. I would say the 52 looks too small, if the 57 works then great, although I would say 55 would be more ‘normal’ for you.

I'm also 5' 7" I go by top tube length centre to centre and on vintage frames for me 21" TT c to c is the right size, but up to 22" fits me fine ,too...
