Do you happen to know if Jerry Heidenreich is the same Jerry Heidenreich who swam for the USA at the Munich olympics? There's certainly a resemblance, but I'm not sure that the age and location work out. One in from the left here, next to Mark Spitz:

Jerry Heidenreich lives in my town and I see him all the time. That's not him on the right. I'm pretty sure it's Marc Horwitz.

In the centre, you're right, it might be Joe or it might be his brother Richard, now deceased. I met Joe when he was about 18 years old, and a friend and I picked him up hitchhiking. At that age he already had the ZZ Top look, with a beard down to his chest and hair to the middle of his back, as depicted in the tandem shot.

Of course, the others in the tandem shot are Otis Guy, myself and Velo-Club Tamalpais club president Victor Pritzker. The history of that shot is a tandem criterium in 1974, the only such thing I had ever heard of, in which Breeze/Guy finished first and Kelly/Pritzker finished third. The bouquets on the bikes were received on the podium.

Well, the caption to the photo, presumably written by the author of the article named David Smiley, says it is Joe and the other two are who I've already named. I'm afraid I can only go by the written word. However, if you can find out anything different it would be interesting to know.

The article was about a series of junior races organised between 9 schools in the Northern California area (including Marin Catholic High, Tamalpais High, Redwood High, Girls ABLA, San Rafael). The overall series (6 races) winner was Jerry Heidenreich. There are lots of other people named from various schools.

Oh, and there were some tandem road races organised in the UK in the 60's (I think) on a closed circuit somewhere on the south coast area, possibly a Naval base. I'm sure I have an article about it somewhere. At least one of the teams rode fixed wheel!
