Hi,

Just bought this new White Industries crankset. Does anybody knows what year it is and what BB I have to use? I mean the axle length!

Cheers,
Bart

Looks the same as the one on my '95 Marin

Can't remember the BB axle length needed though sorry!

Nice parts!

Some sets have been produces under licence of WI. The original series came from the USA.
The ones fitted on Marin '95 models are all 'custom made in Japan'. Had these on my Pine Mtn with an Shimano LX BB. Nevertheless excellent components with good looks!

I think that the BB length depends on the frame you want to fit these to.

I run them on my tourer. You can get away with a 110mm BB, but 113 is definitely better.

They are very nice cranks, although the nerds don't like that they are made by Sugino. In my experience Suginos are superior than Shimano, being lighter and tend to run true, but they didn't have the marketing muscle.

Thanks! I think the 'nerds' don't like them because they are not the USA made White Industries cranks. :?

I bougt these NOS and they look great! :P

It's probably true that they aren't loved like the 'real' White Industries cranks might be, but then it's hardly a surprise given that the Sugino replicas where OEM on Marin's.

I'd disagree with them being in anyway superior to a similar Shimano chainset, though. I ran a set that was replaced twice before I gave up on Sugino - the threads and tapers seemed to made of cheese, and in no way were they stiffer than a similarly priced Shimano crank.

But then I might have just been unlucky with them.

The problem that I always seem to find with Shimano is that they run wonky, leading to that annoying scratching of the chain in the front mech and repeated trimming. I've tried shifting one flat on BBs etc, but to no avail. The earlier 110 PCD ones seem better, and I had a set of M730's which were superb (but at 175mm killed my knees on the tourer so had to go :( ).

Campagnolo and Sugino just don't seem as bad. The Sugino Mighty 900 is lighter than XTR, seems no floppier and doesn't have the cracking problems of exotica.

I wouldn't generalize all Suginos were great. I had Sugino Impel (mid range LX/XT equivalent) model which was uttery bad. Those cranks were made from cheese indeed. I've stripped threads using proper crank puller and tapers tend to get flared quickly. I beleive top end Mighty 900 or made to order for quality brands as White Ind or Ritchey were much better. That said Sugino has good reputation overall and I wouldn't mind to have these gorgeous White Ind. cranks. Great find.

I wasn't sure, but do you think I paid too much? They cost me €45??
