when will this be considered a Retrobike?

April 15th 2042.
Incidentally the exact same day I'll be recognised as the rightful ruler of the known universe.
It was foretold in the tea leaves by Mystic Meg.
Unfortunately I must state that when this comes to fruition I shall be ordering the complete and total annihilation of all carbon bicycles.
So the actual answer is never. :)

My experience is that nobody actually loves their carbon bike.
As soon as something better comes along, they swap.

Fickle feckers

Steel is the opposite end of the material spectrum, ti and ally hang out in the middle ground.

Yup.

Discounted already -30% from new after season for owner.
Discounted -30% when second owner buys it in 1 year.
Discounted -30% when third owner potentially buys obsolete un-upgradable shit in year 3+

That leaves 10% left. Which equates to selling some used kitchen utensil on Ebay, or the charity shop, or the tip to offload.

I would wait it out. But it will never be retro around here - which is the reference.

This for me at least is just something not to bother with along with all the over produced and marketed bullshit moulded clones with no hope, glamour, nor charisma, nor real real history to speak of.
Some flawed maths there

If we ever saw the cost of recycling (landfilling) CF factored into the purchase price we might see attitudes towards it from consumers change and people hang onto CF bikes for longer. I totally agree its vapouware and the kind of punters who worship at the epoxy laminate altar are chasing the next hit each year. My own neo luddite view is that at some time in the future the decadence of carbon fibre will lead it to be viewed as dirty and socially untenable - and people will shake their heads and say 'WTF were they thinking'.

And before anybody says 'but you can recycle it!' - yes you can, but not much of that happens and nobody buys recycled CF when new is almost the same price. The idea of CF recycling is a sticking plaster to make us feel less bad about ourselves and to give the industry the appearance of having a conscience.

The recycling is primarily
"Energy from Waste"
As we call it in the Bristol area.

This includes some food waste, cardboard, plastics, and carbon fibre bike parts🤣
