When did plain purple ano become 3DV?

Resurrecting this 10-year old post, as the question "What 3DV stands for?" wasn't answered in the end. And I'm interested in knowing the answer . So 3DV might be for 3D Violet, violet being synonymous of purple. OK. But... 3D? Excuse me, three dimensional ano? Well :?.

Sorry to jump in...

Anyone had 3DV done with Acorn? Or anyone else? Since Chris (Rampage / Intrincycle) shut shop and won’t be reopening, I’ve been skeptical of anyone else’s chances since it was only Chris who could do true, proper, 3DV - not ‘purple’.

I have a small stack of bits need doing - strip, polish, reanodize in 3DV. My only option so far is sending to John Grafton to send to his anodizing guy. I want to avoid that if possible.

Violet 3D is the name of the dye. Several companies make / made it.

3DV was the name given to a certain shade/colour of anodising using Violet 3D dye in a collaboration between Ringle and Grafton. It was to ensure the two companies sold parts with matching purples. There is something in the archive in here about it. So really, only parts made by Grafton and Ringle are 3DV. Everything else is Violet 3D.

Done correctly, the colour jumps out at you, hence the 3D. It’s the only colour that looks better on 7075 aluminium rather than the brighter anodising 6061 / 6063 aluminium IMHO.

It’s not used anymore because it fades a lot in sunlight, there are better alternatives these days but I’ve not seen anything to match the colour.



I did one part with Violet 3D that was black but I managed to get it to be be Violet 3D at certain angles. I can’t remember how I did it, what part it was or what happened to it!

It was the first ‘in fashion’ ano colour back in 91/92 iirc and looks the best on a Ti or white bike when all the components ano match. There was a nice Hei Hei 3DV on here somewhere.
