When did it start going rubbish?

The beginning of the end was Titanium!
There's more than a whiff of the "Emperor's New Clothes" about this "magic" metal.
Freed from the constraints of steel tubing various frame builders such as Moots and Merlin created horrendous looking jalopies, just because they could.
How these improved on the ride of Ritchey Logic is debatable, but if YOU couldn't feel it, you weren't a mountain biker.... :P

It's strong, light, springy and doesn't corrode, what's not to like?

I should have mentioned in my defence of Vs and cantis that I like building wheels and consider rims as expendable.
It seems disc brakes get upgraded every year whereas the " classic " Vs ( XTR, Ultimates, Pauls, etc ) have been around for donkeys years and I understand them. Aesthetically, I've yet to see a graceful disc brake and disc hubs still look agricultural in comparision.

Hope C2's have been around since '96 (is that pre V?  ) and are beautifully machined. The early rotors were a bit clunky, but are now elegant rings of steel. IMHO, they have yet to be bettered.

I dont care about what brakes I have - I just dont want 'suspension corrected'!!!

It's called suspension corection because suspension is just plain wrong!

For me itt all started going slightly squiffy with the advent of A-headsets and V-brakes, a pox on them!

Can we retitle this thread to 'If you want to have a moan about modern bikes post here' and sticky it

Whether you like them or not surely having more choice is good? All mountain, freeride, downhill, hardcore XC, XC, jump, 4X, hardcore hardtail and so on, sure marketing names but easy for people( not us of course  ) to understand . At this moment you can pretty much get a bike to do anything you want and I honestly don't see the problem with it.

Discs vs all other braking systems, see above.

Yes, a Zaskar.

Indeed, I think the new one looks great
