Wheel building costs

I was quoted around £20 per wheel in labour alone, building a wheel does take some time even for a pro.

I decided to buy the parts myself and build them myself, plenty of online guides around (I mainly used the guide on Sheldon Browns site). I found it very interesting and the wheels have actually turned out ok (so far ).
If I need them fine tuning then I can always take them to my LBS, trueing a wheel comes in at £5-10 depending on how taco'd it is so even if I balls things up somehow it's still cheaper then the original price I was quoted.

I had a pair built at Merlin cycles last year - I provided the hubs and rims and they provided the DB DT Swiss spokes and the building skills. £75 the pair, but they have a good reputation.

I had two sets built up by Mercian in Derby at £100 each
For labour and spokes ,I supplied the rims and hubs but
They are brilliant and have stayed true.

My LBS has just charged me £90 for a pair - I supplied the old wheels, and spangly NOS rims. They did the dismantling, rebuild and supplied new DB spokes all round.

And jolly lovely they are too.

Nice work if you can get it!

Anybody keen enough to be on here ought to consider making their own wheels IMO. I'm sure there are things you already do on your bike that are a lot more tricky than building wheels.

cheers captaincosmic Iv'e been doing it since i was 14 many moons have passed and iv'e truly got the hang of it now last year i built all Torq fitnesses wheels for there team and i build freelance for the local bike shop i also offer a mail order service unlike what bm0p700f said "If you doing at a hobby or a bit of fun then you can charge less like the ebay guy" Iv'e never played at it i take it very seriously and iv'e not played at it 5 mins like you its kind of annoying when people who have just opened a bike shop and jump in with the i know everything i run a bike shop attitude :evil: and £40 a wheel with spokes if there good quality is a fair price id say

bear in mind spokes are about £1.20 each for D.T.
I'm going to give it a go myself without a jig :shock:

Cheers buddy , trying to find the correct spoke length at the momment.
as my rims are not listed on the DT site.

Just had a wheel built I provided the rim and hub and the spokes and labour came to £35 built, I even bought a trueing stand last year and its not been out the box or bag yet* And also a box of spokes were bought to have a go at building a set . I never thought of keeping hold of 2 pairs of wheels that came on a crappy ebay bike could have practised on them insted of tipping them :twisted:
