Transplant that over to the uk and you end up with a mud clogging, chainsuck inducing nightmare of a brake that would wear through the rims in one decent winter ride.
Ok then, I don't really want to play anymore but this is the nearest thing to evidence I can find. Your answer will be that you were only refering to the U-brakes and you will claim victory, the end.
The only reason that started this is because I didn't like you rubbishing what to my mind was an acceptable retro bike. Sure all the components are crap but they bolt off which just leaves you with that awkward brake position. I'm pretty sure that plenty of folk on here have other makes of bike with the chainstay u-brake and they get by alright. Maybe they fabricate guards like on the rollercam brake in the "quality" thread, maybe they save these bikes for the dryer days, maybe we should start a "show us your chainstay u-brake bikes" and find out.
Now come and meet ededwards and myself at the Turkey Twizzler rerun and blow the cobwebs off your lovely Manitou!

I whole heartedly disagree and will continue to use these pictures from last month until, until, a better example comes along:
a modern disc brake disabled by winter, the SS canti bike carried on
