Embrace them - have a coke and a smile.

See... you feel better already.

The problem with the placement of there brakes were that they were pioneered in Marin where the nearest to mud they get is dust mixing with the riders sweat. Transplant that over to the uk and you end up with a mud clogging, chainsuck inducing nightmare of a brake that would wear through the rims in one decent winter ride.

Ok then, I don't really want to play anymore but this is the nearest thing to evidence I can find. Your answer will be that you were only refering to the U-brakes and you will claim victory, the end.

The only reason that started this is because I didn't like you rubbishing what to my mind was an acceptable retro bike. Sure all the components are crap but they bolt off which just leaves you with that awkward brake position. I'm pretty sure that plenty of folk on here have other makes of bike with the chainstay u-brake and they get by alright. Maybe they fabricate guards like on the rollercam brake in the "quality" thread, maybe they save these bikes for the dryer days, maybe we should start a "show us your chainstay u-brake bikes" and find out.

Now come and meet ededwards and myself at the Turkey Twizzler rerun and blow the cobwebs off your lovely Manitou!

Again, nicely put and without descending into insults.

I can hardly think of use +20 year old steel bikes in tough wet and muddy conditions these days, no matter it's Rockhopper, Cunningham or anything else even with cantis. You know chaps, for that purpose are modern disk brake workhorses.

I whole heartedly disagree and will continue to use these pictures from last month until, until, a better example comes along:

a modern disc brake disabled by winter, the SS canti bike carried on

Sadly the turkey twizzler is not for me, I am even more delicate than my manitou. Illness as kept me off bikes for well over a year so i have to make do with pointless arguments for entertainment. And, loathed as I am to used bloody emoticons, i will break a habit of a lifetime- :D

Very sorry to here that you are not well enough to ride your bikes.

Many thanks for the smiley :D .

Again, still unable to show me the contradiction you saw, ededwards or haven't you the wherewithal to back up argument facts or evidence? Or is it that you realise that you have no case that you have to descend into your normal patronising self, holding yourself aloft as the untouchable moderator.

If you're going to moderate, do so but remain impartial, if you are going to get yourself involved in debate or argument then expect to be able to defend your position robustly, or expect to end up looking like a fool.

Sorry to hear that you are too ill to ride but why not come to the Twizzler for lunch anyway as we'll all stop between morning and afternoon sessions and the caterers have provided some tasty food.

However there is little point in debating the above or expressing a different opinion as your typical response is to insult the posters intelligence, attitude and/or credibility even when a point is made as gently as weeman_mtb did above; insults to three different people on this thread alone. Post whatever opinion you want but I'd suggest having the good grace to allow others to think differently without such overt antagonism as it does you, and the point you are trying to make, few favours.

Incredible, you keep on posting but never answer the point.

You accusing me of contradicting myself and yet haven't the decency to show me where or how.

Am I not justified in feeling aggrieved that you challenge me and my intelligence with no basis or grounding and then refuse to give an explanation of your actions? Instead you now choose to revert to form and hide behind your position as 'an impartial moderator', passing down judgement on my behaviour when there is no one to do the same to you.

If you are never going to bother doing that then why not just shut this thread down. Or better still, get John to do it so that you can save face.
