What's happened to all the "stuff"

I'm sure most of us have sold stuff in the past, only to find you could have done with it a while later, then found that a direct replacement is going to cost more than you got for it.
A whole lot of this!
Problem is I didn't know at the time that I would need the part in the future, but selling it to fund something at the time was most important :D

I've got a few things for sale at lower prices than others have sold the same item for yet they still aren't selling, so perhaps peoples (hoarders) draws are already full to bursting🤔

Yes, but....the other side of that is if you keep everything incase you need it, the opportunity cost is greater than the potential loss of paying 20% more when you buy back that 1 bit you sold.

Ive done it myself, but tbh, its been 2 bits in a decade.....and then i found them again in a few weeks...but what i have had is all the cash and the ability to use those "shed pennies" for other projects.

Plus tbh, we haven't even touched on the "space" issue of keeping stuff. Ive seen the evidence of sheds so full of "stuff" that some of you guys can't even get in them to work!

As for starting the process. Its a JDI job....just pick 1 bit and start. It goes from there. As someone who has got rid of the best part of 600 bits in the last 6 years....i know the overwhelming pain of starting...but its nice when you do.

Freedom!

This certainly resonates with me.
I have a workshop full of stuff, countless unfinished projects and a gnawing sense of dread every time I go in to look around.

I really need to start clearing out instead of just opening dusty boxes, being surprised at the contents, then closing them again.

What's this "prices are a bit low" nonsense?

Everything I try and get is owned by a dreamer or someone that tries to squeeze the pips out of me.

I've even started unbuckling my belt mid negotiation, and sometimes even slap my own arse, to save the seller the job.

al.

Postage is just too much of a hassle unless the parts have any value. The last big clear out I had, I priced low with postage extra and most of it went to people who bought 4-5 bits. Minimum to post these days is £3.50, plus the hassle of going into town and waiting at the post office to send something that makes you a tenner.

I also think we are getting to the point where there isn't as much decent condition older stuff left. It's down to shagged out old parts and NOS. The middle ground stuff has all be used as intended. The stuff that is out there, is probably in a parents garage, who's grown up kids have long since moved out and have no idea it's still there or that there's even people looking for it.

The stuff is deffo out there....its in our sheds!😂

just that most of it needs to be in someone else's shed.

Look at it more as parts musical chairs....moving it round.

I know post is a pain on cheaper bits, but I now use the royal mail collect. Ok its 30p, but thats cheaper in petrol and time than the post office. Plus as they bring the label for free....there's a chance somebody other than myself might be able to read it..😂

I know if you try there are loads of reasons not to bother, but fir the sake of the hobby, can we just try a bit over the next few weeks. Call it a black friday clear out!

Plus, your then all set for new years to start those projects up that have stalled!

There’s very little bikes up for sale at the moment in the usual places. Which limits the parts for sale.

Combined with the fact it’s not worth buying anything mid to low spec as it simply isn’t worth anything when you come to sell it.

I used to be happy to buy a bike for one high end part. Knowing that I can flip all the rest to recoup the money. Now all that mid level stuff just sits unless it’s super cheap.

I have a lot of "stuff" but that's it. All the celebrity bits have been sold in order to buy more of the 'stuff'. The kind of 'stuff' that I may or may not suddenly need

I think I will have a clear out though, a give away of the lesser stuff maybe
