I was under the assumption it was merely a show / race event / social thing having never looked into it and having never really cared either way.

i just googled it because my curiosity got the better of me and from the very brief read am i right to think it is all of the above but the main event being a 24hr relay XC race?

this year will be a no-go but i'm tempted to try and get down there next year and see what all the fuss is about!

This year will be my 1st Mayhem

I kinda think it'll be a bit like Glastonbury Festival, but with bikes

and heckling...

Do it - an institution amongst active RB'ers... be there on Friday for the beer, BBQ and banter...

Give it a go, I rode the first one and have done several since......even when it's horrendous due to the weather and you swear you'll never do another, oddly, you'll be back for more 8)

If you bring a hog roast then I'd finally have a reason to come!! Nom nom nom!!!

Seriously though, I'd love to go but it looks too hard for me, long distances never being my thing really.

I hadn't heard of it until all the chatter started on here a couple of months ago.

It does look like great fun, and hope to do it next year after more training (there's no way I'd be fit enough now) either as part of a RB team or with some colleagues to build a company team.

Very much looking forward to the aftermath thread this year too.

Did my first Mayhem in 2008 - 800 mile round trip for a 7 mile lap :) - it was one of my 40th Birthday treats.

I cannot recommend it enough, the race is an important part of it but the atmosphere is what makes it - especially alongside the RB crew.
I wandered around in an adrenalin fueled daze for part of it, even though I was only down for doing 1 lap :)

And don't forget the local pies - best ever, although not ideal for a racing diet.

I'll be back in 2013, I'm a bit fitter now so might progress to a 4 man team and do 2 laps :) Might be tempted next year if there is a hog roast involved.

I think the hog roast will attract a whole new group of RBers, although possibly not ones that will finish near the front.
