What to look for?

Have a close look at the frame. A lot of firms use the same frame across any one particular model range, and the difference is the finishing kit. Alpinestars and Giant are 2 random examples of firms that liked/still do this. That Alivio shod frame is quite liable to be identical to one with XT, so don't rely too heavily on componentry to tell you a tale.

Okay, so in short, if im buying for the frame I shouldnt take note of the components, whereas if im looking for a complete bike, i should look at the components? And also, manufacturers use the same frame, but change components depending on models?

Thanks

If you're buying a complete bike look at the components AND the frame. The general.trend is that cheaper bikes have cheaper components so it's.a good place to start. That said, a significant number of manufacturers use the same frame for each model range and its only the jewelry that changes, so you need to scrutinise both to be sure.

Well, just got back now, and absolutely nothing worth a look at, dissapointing but made worth it by the ride down the Grand Union Canal, lovely day for it! 8D
