what people throw away

I've already hinted at the scarce respect handmade lugged bikes get in Italy.
Yesterday, next to a grbage bin, I found a Tommasini Columbus EL lugged frame with Campy Ergopower shifters/levers, fir brakes, shimano 600 cranks, stem and bar. I called my friend, who's into retro quality bikes as well, and he couldn't believe it, he was looking for a similar frame and he got it for free (well, it was too big for me otherwise he shold have had to keep looking for it!).
More, there was also an older Frera almost complete bike (but I left it there): no space for other projects!

It never ceases to amaze me what some people actually throw away.

Yesterday my wife and I took a trip to our local "Civic Amenity Site" with a load of garden rubbish. That, naturally enough goes in a big de-mountable skip labelled "Green Waste" - that goes to a local company who make compost from it.

Then we have another big skip labelled "Burnable Items" - this all goes to the incinerator (which generates electricity) . Right at the front of this skip were two beautiful Victorian blanket chests - for burning !!
We loaded one into the back of the car, took the other one out as well and asked the guy working there to look after it for us until we came back for it (which we did of course). They are both over 100 years old and I find it really sad that something that has served its purpose for all that time, and now can and will continue to do so, was just dumped to be burnt.

What infuriates me is that there are several charities here which not only would appreciate items like that to sell to help raise money, but one of them (Hospice Care) will actually come and collect them for free. It's mainly due to the efforts of this charity that we have a wonderful new Hospice for the people of the Island - the charity raised half the cost and the rest was matched by the Government.

I always try to think "there but for the grace of God go I" and imagine that I was homeless, old and alone, or in need of Hospice care. It happens......

Sorry - all very OT (Rant over  )
