What makes a Retrobiker?

I would say we ALL have a common interest on here and its not just bikes !!

Retrobikers like old cars, generally rear wheel drive !! Off Roaders of all kinds to get dirty in the mud !! Photography (well most of us and dont lie !!) Oh and of course, classic and vintage bikes :D :D

We are a breed that thrives on all things particular and intricate !! I bet we all suffer from OCD too

A "retrobiker" is someone who has been riding 'or' has had an interest in bikes for many years. This interest results in a vast wealth of knowledge of bikes, components and other cycling related stuff.

The "retrobiker" choices to invest time in building and customising bikes rather then just emptying a new bike out of a box (although they may also own new bikes as well).

Its all about creating and sharing a vision of how a bike should be, time spent putting your mark on something and then offering it up to like minded individuals to recieves opinions of what good and not so good. Also expressing your own opinions on the efforts of others.

It doesn't matter what you ride or build.. its just under your skin.. its part of your life.

Retro

No such thing it's an Urban Myth, we're just all riders, happens the older ones amongst us like to ride the bikes we used to BITD, probably to capture the memories of those good times, bit like playing old Tunes!

I reckon it's partly nostalgia, but also the fact that most new bikes are just not particularly interesting. Mountain bikes in the 80s and 90s were still evolving very quickly, but today it's all settled down into competent, homogenous, inexpensive crap.
Or that could just be me being a reactionary old git.

I'd agree with that, there isn't much around these days that really excites me bike wise (except for titanium of course).

I disagree totally, bikes have NEVER been better than the current crop and more capable to ride, they are evolving much faster at present, becoming lighter stronger and better handling than ever.

Technology wise & weight wise of course, especially full suspension

The majority though are, mass produced hydroformed ugly things which just 'sterilize' the riding experience...the equivalent in say the car world would be Mitsubishi evolutions/Imprezas

Hogwash. New bikes are mass produced copies of one another like never before. Overpriced garbage.

A well dressed Klein Rascal would clean the floor with a modern Stumpjumper, and strut ten times the style in the process.

Maybe it's just me being sentimental but I just feel riding a nice retrobike is just more of an 'event' than riding something new regardless of cost & spec.

There are some things i.e disc brakes that are worlds apart (& better) than the cantis we all used to run day in day out.
