What frame for uber-light build?

I've decided that the clicky-clicky noise coming from the BB on the Klein is bad (has had new BB and cranks and the noise is still there) so the frame will be going. I was going to get hold of a carbon rigid fork (Pace RC31 or similar) and go for a mental light mobile which would make my morning uphill commute more fun.

I don't have the cash for another Klein so what else should I be looking at? I can't find a massive amount of info on the net on frame weights so any tips would be beneficial. I'm assuming aluminium is the way to go for weight saving, unless someone can point me in the direction of a stupidly light steel frame at less than stupid prices.

It has to me an MTB frame (I like bunny hopping too much so can't get a roadie), and available for less than £150/£200 2nd hand.

What sort of thing should I be looking at?

I'd look into the clicking drivetrain as I really doubt its the frame.

All the other drivetrain parts were on a DMR trailstar up until 2 weeks ago with no clicking at all. Last week I swapped the BB and crankset, with no difference.

The Rock Lobster TIG Team SL is an Easton Ultralite frame and weighs 3.25lb. New they are £299 but less than half that when they come up on eBay. Modern frame with geometry corrected for 100mm travel (although i run 80mm with no issues at all).

doesnt have to be the drivetrain. i thought I had a BB creak. turns out it was the replacement mech hanger against the frame.

checked the frame for cracks? my old klein fervor started creaking & the classic seattube had cracked (despite 150mm of post buried in the frame)

I've already had the frame repaired once - broken chainstay around the mech hanger bolt. The mech hanger is now a permanent fixture! I can't see any cracks forming anywhere yet, but I'm becoming increasingly paranoid, hence looking for another frame.





I'm quite tempted by the LTS for sale in the classifieds. I know it's kind of going away fromt he "lightweight" theme but I tend to change my mind often!

You're right, I did neglect to mention that. I reckon it's probably had a hard life before me. Only a matter of time before it dies.

Decided to abandon the lightweight thing. I'm 16 stone at the moment so it's a pointless exercise. Gonna go for the LTS I think - never owned a full sus before, and I'm sure the extra effort required to lug it uphill will do wonders for my BMI.

Did it click before you had the chainstay repaired?

The best way to lose weight is to go running. For some reason, mtbing isn't anything like as effective. If you feel too fat to run, then you should *definitely* start running! Slow as you like, doesn't matter, but never stop for a rest, three times a week, beats dieting any day.
