what does "freeride" mean?

I always thought the term came from snowboarding. When boarders used to climb big hills looking for the back country stuff it was called freeride. Off piste was too poncy ski lingo. A few years later the term seemed to come into MTB parlance.

My take on it is, freeride is off the beaten track and you would push or cycle to the top of a big hill for the purpose of huckling down it. Ramps and stuff I would call more north shore stuff. But, as seen, everyone has a different opinion.
