what does "freeride" mean?

Cannondale king, you most certainly do get it,thanks, couldn't have put it better myself.

I certainly agree with the 'just go riding and have a laugh' bit....

Have a closer look and see how the kona catalogue talks of hardtail freeriders?!?!?! The last time I looked, freeride bikes weighed 60lbs, had 12" of travel, 8 gears and a pointlessly complicated chain device...

Or is that retrofreeride?!?

They still make hardtail freeride bikes. The Cove Stiffee for example. Usually the fullies weigh around 30 pounds and have 6-8" of travel.

I'd say freeride is riding out and sessioning a trail feature for fun(drop, woodwork, jump, nasty DH section, ) rather than just riding an big XC loop all day. Doesn't necessarily mean huge travel, thats mainly just seen in the movies for the really big stuff out in Canada which most mortals just look at.

Anyhow freeride is now retro, all the kids are now riding slopestyle

yeh for me that's kinda it... and exactly what bikes like my Trailstar are for... general tooling around, bit of downhill, bit of jumping etc...
at the end of the day it's just a name and I guess it means different things to different people. The question is, does it really matter? As long as we're having fun riding our (retro or modern) bikes :D :D :D :D :D :D

Is that named after Deep Cove? My sister lived there for a couple of years, nice place.

Yes, Cove bikes come from Deep Cove. That's where Chaz (owner of Cove bikes) set up shop back in 81 or so on main street (now moved.) My friends live there, too. Beautiful place. I spend a lot of time there every summer, riding Seymour and going for boat rides up Indian Arm. They spoil me rotten and I love them for it. That's why I suggesting renting a Stinky from them...cove shop, not my friends... and trying Seymour, as it's local. Just get a lift up the mountain from your sis. That's some hard pedaling on a heavy bike, but you do see plenty of guys taking the hard way to the top with all their gear on their back. They would probably put most of us to shame with that kind of patience and determination. How often do you visit her?
