Cheers guys (misteroo, Thunderchief, Midorimage), I appreciate all the input, and its looking like the comfort factor is something I'll have to consider now.

I will of course post up the outcomes of whatever choices I make!!

Thanks,

Al

If you ride off road , when you add suspension , it takes away what riding off road is all about in my opinion.
This, I'm not quite of an age where I need it.

So, at what age do you need it :?:

Anyway, suspension (front or rear) doesn't take away what off-road riding is all about. It's not as though having 150mm travel front and rear makes every sort of terrain feel sanitised and like a main road - you still have to work and have rider input (and lots of it), not just float along as if you were on a magic carpet.
Unless you just ride on really smooth, tame tracks, of course....

There's a place for rigid, hardtail and FS IMHO - I have at least one of each and which I choose to ride largely depends on how I feel on the day and not on the terrain. It keeps an old man on his toes, and a change is as good as a rest, they say.

+1 for that ^^

i have a full sus and hardtail with front sus.
had rigid - never really did XC with it though.
i like my boingy stuff, i like big tyres, i dont mind the weight (i'm far from a weight weenie) coz i figure that it'll make me work harder, lose a few more pounds and keep them spare tyres at bay :)

some days i'll feel like cracking out the full sus and gobbling up the tree roots, other days i'll want a more considered ride and take the hardtail.

as far as i'm concerned, its not whether its needed, its whether you feel like it :) no harm in giving your self the option.

Cheers guys, looking for front sus as we speak, not easy given the Orange's 1" headtube requirement but I'll keep looking!

Thanks,

Al

hardtail with front sus.

Is not a 'hardtail' a front susser? A hardtail with out front sus is a rigid or a bike with no froks.

I ride with suspension as i like to go for long 80-100k rides but for quick XC racing I think rigid it actually better if your arms can take it.

There is a local race I compete in and the winner of this years series always rides a aluminium rigid bike with magura rims brake and a 1x8 drive train. Everyone else rides a expensive front suspension XC specific bike and he rules!

It doesn't matter what you ride, it's your ability that counts!

Nice!!! Ability is lacking at the mo, but I will be building it up slowly as my shoulder heals. Need to practise and then see what I think, but the skills will come hopefully!! I'm not looking to become a hardcore racer but having the ability to ride properly is obviously a must.

I'm going to get a front suspension bike, and keep the P7 original I think, then I can choose between the 2 depending on what mood I'm in!

Cheers ;-)
