What bike is it - just for fun ;)

Judging by his appearance, number of tattoos, hair etc I would place the pictures well before 1994. And obviously not a Diamond Back.

Yup, but it's the bit about "using an old no-name steel bike" before '94 that might be relevant. Have a re-read.

Could just be someone elses bike in the photos.

I didn't say that particular bike was a Diamondback. I did say MBA often did features on celebrity riders. Sammy Hagar, L.A. Kings goalie Kelly Hrudey (Hrudey's masks at that time were painted by his friend Troy Lee), and they did a feature on Duff. At the time of the article he was seriously into off-road riding, and DBR (as companies often do with celebrities) saw that he was riding one of their bikes, latched on, and gave him a Ti/XTR Axis w. full DBR kit.

The way I read the article, he was riding an old steel bike during his non-sober days in the early 1990s, that is to say long after his initial interest in mountain biking. He probably wasn't referring to the same bike in the pics above which I believe were taken in the late '80s.

FMJ - you misunderstood me, I was referring to the quote in Drencrom's post where Duff mentions buying a DB in 1994, not your earlier post.

All of this begs the question, who has Duff's GT now?

likely a 1989 Karakoram due to the color, top mounts and long model name on the down tube. Nothing else from 1998 up to the introduction of rapidfire shifters fits the MO.

The writing was in yellow i seem to remember. My first mtb was a granite timberline which i got in 89? iirc maybe 90, i think it was actually made from granite too!

same type as RetroMTB.pl's guys ;)
BTW shifters are looking for me as an 7s 732, 730 is not having as flat tops as those IMO
