What BB spindle length for 1998 (maybe '99) Klein Attitude?

Hi folks,
Does anyone know the correct spindle length for a late 90's Attitude? I'm not 100% sure of the year but it's one without internal cable routing.

I got a good deal on a Hope Ti BB with a fairly short spindle (forget the actual length, around 107mm IIRC), which I fancied trying out in order to get the pedals inboard a little bit ... and to drop a few grams :roll:

Anyway, it's messed up the chainline, and also I discovered that the front mech cage needed to be set so far in that it, or at least part of the mechanism, actually rests against the seat tube and limits travel, with the result that it's hit and miss whether I can actually shift to the granny ring, especially under load!

All in all, not a successful experiment! Can someone remind me what I need to undo the mess??

spindle length depends on the cranks you want to use not (so much) on the frame. so without knowing the cranks it's impossible to recommend anything.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm using RaceFace Next LP cranks, square taper version.

Race Face recommends 107mm for steel frames and 110-113mm for aluminum frames so if 107 doesnt work try 110mm or 113mm.
however, 107mm shouldnt be that much too short that the front der hits the seat tube. are the cranks pulled too far upon the taper?

the frame is a 1999 btw.

Ok, getting back to this after a slight delay ...

I took the cranks off and it does look as though they're a fair way up the taper, probably about 1-1.5mm from the end. Am I right to think this is too far? And I wonder what the reason is? The crank tapers looked ok before I installed them? Could it be an ISO/JIS incompatibility between the crank and spindle tapers.

Regarding the frame year, I just spotted a sticker proudly claiming "Made in Chehalis, WA" at the bottom of the seat tube - is this consistent with a 1999 model?

it's a 99 frame - the only year the Attitude had external cables. the Chehalis plant was closed in early 2002.

1.5mm sounds a bit too far up on the spindle but if the cranks are firm on the taper and stay there it should not be a problem. did you grease the tapers?
