Hi all.
Completely out of my bicycle knowledge comfort zone here, I'm normally over on the pre 97 mtb section.
I've offered to help out a family friend. He is the father of my brother in - law.
Now in his mid - eighties and no longer able to ride. Back in the 70's and 80's he was a successful amateur racer...mainly in South Africa but also in the Brentwood area on his return to the UK.
He is well aware that at some point he will have to sell his collection. No-one else in the family is really interested in his passion for classic road bikes and he has expressed that he'd like his legacy to go to collectors rather than end up as university/pub/hipster hacks.

At this point in time, he is looking to get true values before making any decisions. Like all good collectors, he is reluctant to let things go....afterall, these are his racing memories.
Each bike for him has a story....but as already said, he is also aware that he now needs to move some on.

Valuations for each bike as a whole please. Splitting for parts is not an option.

Again. Please remember that these are not my bikes. I'm offering to act as a negotiatior if he decides to sell. The owner has no email / interest in Internet / or even a mobile phone!

*Mods* if this is in the wrong place, could you relocate please?

There are 10 bikes in total.

Lets start with the 1st up.....

Vitus 979. 1980?
58 cm
Dura-ace 8spd
Mavic chainset
Campagnolo brakes and hubs

I have no knowledge of road, so please feel free to correct or add to my description. Any information you can add is more than welcome.

I'll add another bike each day to keep the thread going.

Thanks in advance

I saw a video(??) on Youtube made by Bikeituk recently that was about Graham Weigh and his private collection. Iirc, he mentioned that the white Vitus frames are quite rare. I don't have a problem with being corrected and the interview was very interesting and well worth a watch, IMO. Good Luck with the sale.

@Dicky71
Thanks for this info. I'll check it out.
Absolutely any info I can gain on these bikes is greatly appreciated.
Any more guidance on values of this collection?
As previously stated....this is out of my field of expertise.
Let's call him John to make the conversation easier.....would be massively appreciative of honest price guidelines.

Been away on a golfing holiday in Ireland all weekend.....so I'll add the next one.

Holdsworth 23" 196?
Not your normal wheel size. John had great difficulty in sourcing new tyres for this.
I'm guessing Campagnolo for the groupset?
The bars and stem seem unusual? - South African maker?

Personally think these may need to be sold off much cheaper than the some of parts. I can't totally speak for the UK market, but it's accepted it's not moving much. There are some choice, desirable and some expensive parts on some of these bikes, but I do need to say each bike is a bit of a mish-mash overall in my eyes. Hope I haven't offended.

Pretty sure any buyer would split for parts they need, or rebuild according to their tastes, or just for the frame because it's their size. List individually with a reserve at £250 each or the entire lot for something like £2500 and see how it goes would be my advice.

Thanks for the reply Woz.

No offense taken, but yes, I agree....the non-compete groupsets and mis-match of components will de-value the desirability of these bikes.....and that most people like to build a bike to their own spec means that these are unlikely to remain in their current build.
There's some more to add, some may more valuable than the £250 each... Especially the Hetchins, but as you say...the market isn't moving much. The boat might be well and truly missed to expect top prices?

More to add tomorrow.

Cheers

Hetchins you say? In the same size as the others? Ever since selling one that was too small for me I’ve had half an eye out for one.
