Upgrading 10-speed Campag Ergos to 11?

Hi folks,

First, I don't know if this has been covered before so apologies if I'm going over old ground.

I have a 'spare' pair of 10-speed Chorus Ergoshifter units (as you do). They're the second generation shape that was used up until about 2006 (I think).

Is it possible to change some internal parts to turn them into 11-speed units? Or is the internal design significantly different by now so as to preclude this? Has anyone tried this before?

I need to get mechs, cassette etc for the new project I have in mind anyway, so it's not such a big deal if I go for 10 or 11 speed if the shifters will accommodate an economical upgrade.

Cheers,
Gareth.

I dont think they can - the later ones may be able to, but i think they changed the internals when they changed the hood shape

have a word with the guys at Mercian for advice. They sell the internals only or do the job for you when people want to change the number of speedshifts on campag

You beat me to it mate  Mercian is the best place for advice and have a fully equipped shop to do the repairs on site and will
even do the job in front of you, but remember they fix ergo levers mainly on a thursday as this is when the chap comes in to do any such repairs.

I wouldn't tell anyone to just strip their levers down as you need a solid bench and a vice and a tool which securely holds the
lever whilst the mechanic strips the lever down, I took an ergo lever apart and everything just sprung apart and bits went flying.

Plenty of youtube video's showing close up/detailed info on how to take them apart and building them back up,
its the building them back up which is the problem, which looks daunting to the novice.

Thanks for the tips folks. I just called Mercian and they pretty much confirmed the above.

The Campag internals are entirely different for the mark 3 design, the current ergonomic ones. So a 10-speed set of the current design could be upgraded to 11-speed, but the upgrade can't be fitted to the old mark 2 units like I have.

The weightweenies thread refers to third-party source for custom 11-speed ratchets so I'll explore that option. But I suspect I'll 'just have to make do' with 10-speed ... sigh

Thanks for all the input!

Cheers,
Gareth.
