Unwanted sounds, sorted... I think!

Spent all day trying to fix a creaky handle bar on the Kilauea SS today only to discover it was the stem quill that needed cleaning and greasing! Sorted that and now the b****y brakes are making the bike sound like a Raleigh shopper every time I go over anything other than smooth tarmac. Turns out the linkages on the M739 V brakes are so worn that there is a huge amount of play in the blocks resulting in a not so musical racket :evil:.

I thought SS's were supposed to be quiet! Looks like I am going to have to visit the LBS tomorrow for some new V's :cry:

Anyone else suffering with unwanted sound?

Yes :twisted: and it's coming from around my front hub, it is in time with wheel rotation but if you pull the brake(disc) gently it goes away.

I can't tell where it is coming from but I am sure it isn't rubbing brake pads. It only occurs when there is weight n the bike.

you used to be able to but shim kits to tighten up play in xt v brakes....

Yup… Pace creaks like an old, tired dog when I pedal. Replaced the BB, greased the post, greased the saddle rails.

Think the sound's coming from the cranks – they're those two-piece XTs with the replaceable spider. has anyone else had problems with those cranks?

My XT M739's on my Clockwork rattle a bit too but i just live with it as they seem to work fine otherwise, cant stand creaking noises though.

Had a loud clacking noise on my LTS for weeks, it was doing my head in :x , thought it was the bushes or shock mount, was then convinced it was loose spokes in the back wheel, gears had been playing up but i'd put that down to the bent rear mech hanger, eventually found the noise was a slack cassette :roll:

Managed to sort the noisy M739 V brakes, changed them for a new pair of LX V's (no linkages). Much quieter! Got the LX's from the Woolly Hat Shop, excellent value.
