I wonder if any Kona experts can throw some light on why this 88/89 splatter paint Kona Cindercome has the U-Brake down on the chainstay and not on the usual seat stay position, firat time i've seen it there.
Also apart from the forks there is no Kona stickers on the frame they've just put the main colour white then splatted it with the red and yellow. From experience with the splatter paints Konas i've had a few of them and they put the stickers on first before splatting. Maybe someone forgot and they still just sold it anyways?
Any thoughts?
My daily Cindercone is there underneath.

By the looks of it that one hasn't had any stickers put on it either, they must of been on a Friday chill out day 😁 would love to know what the serial number is of that one to see if it's close to mine.

The serial number of my other 89 Cindercone compared to the chainstay U brake one.

Nice frame. Maybe it has been repainted/splatted? That came to mind at first mate but when i got it next to the other one the paint and splatter are identical, it's definitely imron paint they used back then,it's as it came out the factory. I'll get some wheels on it and put it next to the other one over the weekend and you'll see what i mean.

Great, look forward to that.

What are your plans for it? touching up the paint and leaving the stickers off? looks a big size too.

Size wise it's a 19" frame. Definitely going to leave the stickers off that's the way it came out the factory and build it up. I'll do a build thread of it because it's a rare Kona in its own right and deserves to be giving a new lease of life.

Kona had copyright issue over their name in a number of continental Europe countries at that time, which led to them having to market the bikes as K Mountain Bikes for a while. These have a large Grey "K" on the Top Tube. Yours however doesn't even have the big "K" on the Top Tube, or indeed Cinder Cone on the Down Tube.

I have some Serial Numbers of the 1998/9 Cinder Cone documented, including another Chain Stay U-Brake version, which is similar to yours.

F903 3728, which my understanding was produced March 1990.
Yours at F903 6171 was produced in the same month and year.

Both of these pre-date the others that I have on record, which both have a U-Brake on the Seat Stays:
F905 2451 May 1990, and F906 1896 June 1990.
