Univega Alpina 506 from 1996

Not sure how long they've been on. I would guess the housings are original and maybe the brake cables  Gear cables look newer but are frayed at the ends. It shifts and stops ok but I'd hate to lose the brakes on a fast road descent.

Also what about those bridges? Are direct replacements available or are there better options?

Re:

By "bridges" I assume you mean the straddle cable that links the two sides of each brake?
You can still get Shimano ones. If yours are ok then you could re-use them, it's more the cables that run inside the outer that get corroded and affect function. Or you can get a plain straddle cable and pimp it out with a fancy cable hanger :)

The straddle cables look in good condition so I'll just give them a good clean. New set of Jagwire brake/gear cables and housings now ordered.

I've found a few video guides to replacing gear and brake cables, but is there anything I should be aware of regarding my particular group set?

Re:

what gear Shifters you got? Usually there's a hole in the shifter to pull the old cable out/fit the new one, sometimes there's a small screw covering the hole, you'll figure it out.
I came across your thread looking at Univega's as I have just got one myself :D

Shifters/levers are the same as these...
