Ugly modern bikes

Re:

That is just so wrong.

Lampre or Mapei C40 , with Dura Ace :xmas-cool:

Re:

Very little on the carbon bike, they used most of it up on the Masters!

I think I can oblige - this is an ex Graham Briggs F&F that I picked up and built up with SRAM red & Mavic Cosmics. Ugly - for sure. Huge oversized tubes, uncultured in many respects, but here's the kicker - it's 6.94kg even with those wheels. It's stiff and the pick-up is instant. Would it look any better in another colourway; I doubt it, as I say the whole thing is rather uncultured but it's fast and nimble and in truth way too good for me

Re:

That'll be a team issue Militis then.

I was after a Militis when I got the KTM, but Raleigh could not tell me anywhere I could see a bike, their best solution being "buy one, we are sure you'll love it". The last straw was when they didn't bother turning up to the Welsh Bike Show and FLi distribution (the KTM importers) did, so that was that.

I would still like to try a Milits, but I'm not sure about those wheels, not with the kind of wind we are 'enjoying' in the South West.

Yes a Militis 3 from 2012 I think they've renamed it as Team in the current line up. I picked two frames up; one was Di2 but that's a step too far for me so sold that to a lad at the LBS. I got them direct from Raleigh and there should also have been a third unused frame which I paid for but they couldn't find it!! Got my money back so no harm done. This frame is the one Briggs won the Stockton GP on.
Really good bike, wheels are a swine in the wind; good job I have other bikes as this one isn't for everyday. There's a couple of 2013 bikes on ebay (ex rider issue) but they're way overpriced and not the prettiest - ugly modern bikes as the thread title says!

Re:

Nice, that's the one I was after.

As you say, silly money s/h. They may be good, but they're not that good.

Maybe, there is a degree of addiction to the latest tech/kit, or even some small hope that with the best, latest kit we might get to be as quick as we once were?

I was talking to a guy at a show about a £5000 wheelset. £5000 just seems crazy for a pair of wheels, but the technology and development is really interesting, the weight and tollerances are amazing, plus they spin forever!!! I asked where their market was, thinking it would be purely professionals. No he said, the main interest we get is from guys like yourself...I'm 53... Maybe it was a sales pitch, but either way I didn't buy any!

From what I've seen, I'd say style and 'soul' have been forced into the back seat. If you look at the 2016 Pinerallo F8, and other manufacturers Cube, Scott, Merida and lots of others, they are dropping the seat stays position down the seat tube so the flowing double triangle frame line has gone, I think making them even more ugly! Even in real life it looks like a rendered CAD drawing.

I've tried to 'get' carbon, I almost want to 'get' carbon, but I don't. But after all, its just reinforced plastic

I think a lot of modern bikes are fugly. Others look very nice indeed

I also think a lot of retro bikes are fugly. Others look very nice.

what's the difference?

There have always been fugly bikes (and also very nice bikes), ever since they were invented!
