Tyre Problem

Think I need to replace my somewhat old rubber as I keep removing threads from near the rim from my Contis and the sidewalls have hairline cracks on them - should I be worried?. I have a set of old orange wildgrippers - but they seem to be a little cracked on the sidewalls too and I seem to remember they were thrown to the back of the garage for good reason all those years ago!

So I look to see whats available now and I am completely bamboozled!!
Also they are all black....whats going on...I want orange!!

I see you can get the smoke and darts again - or should I try something else?

My bike is the SEX THREE so a nice light folding at 2.1 size that has good mud clearance - predictable grip - but good rolling characteristics - as the bike is heavy enough as it is without further hold ups.

Advice appreciated.

Modern rubber! I can understand your confusion.
I've been really pleased with my conti speed kings in 2.3" flavour. They're not really 2.3, more like a 2.1, but they're light, fast rolling, predictable, and lastedv 18months so far, with plenty more to go. they've never seen a road though, and i think they wouldn't last long if they did.
Sand, yes, sand, mud and hardpack are easy meat for them.
i would!
Cheers, Nick

Panaracer Fire XC Pro - a good all-round (yeh, I know... ) tyre in my humble opinion.

Yeah - I looked at the XC Pro - only because its the only tyre that has different choice of colour on sidewalls instead of boring black

The XC Pro's are OK for most riding, get the folding (Kevlar/Aramid bead) ones as they are more supple than the Steel bead ones, not to mention a fair bit lighter.

www.MerlinCycles.co.uk used to be good on price for a pair.

I have used the Panaracer XC Pro Tubeless version in 2.1 size for the last two years and the grip with them is good, and with them being tubeless-no flats ever!

Decided not to risk the old Conti Traction Pros for another ride and decided to replace with Continental Mountain King Foldings.

I guess when threads start comming off and split lines appear in the sidewalls its time to change. Was put off the Panaracers in the end as I made the mistyake of reading some reviews - so went with a set of the contis @ £16.95 each which I thought was a pretty good deal.

Velociraptors, re-available, still good all-rounder (even though I've got 2.4 Panaracer Fire FR's  )
