Tyre frustration

Ok - this is the deal - I've got a set of 1991 ish matrix rims on Bullseye hubs - quite nice really but can't get any nice tyres to fit them! I've got some great Porcs a set of bontys and various others but the only ones that fit are a couple of cheap nasty things and they're really tight to put on!
They are all 26 inch MTB tyres.
The rims are very narrow for MTB wheels. I tried removing the cloth rim tape but this didn't help.
Am I missing something in tyre sizing?
Gaz :?

Can't quite understand the problem here - I have a white porc and a Ritchey Megabite on Campag Atek rims and these are super narrow.

Is it the narrow width that's giving you the problem?

Gaz, I have couple a few sets of those wheels - from a Trek 8900

All 26" tyres will fit with a little perseverence, you just need strong fingers or tyre levers. I'm running original Onza Porcs on mine. Kevlar bead tyres are easier to fit - I've run Z-MAx, Psycho-Ks and Specialized Ummagummas on mine in the past 18 months.

porcs

Bought repo porcs from supercycles.Super tight and hard to fit but once on they are really secure.Bloody cheap too and look the part.

Tyres!

Thanks for all the replies - Find it hard to understand how this wheelset is tighter for tyres than others.
It's just the thought of getting a puncture and spending an age in the rain wrestling with tyres with my puny thumbs.
Going to force on the porcs and take the mobile so the wife can pick me up!
