Typical! Chain snapped on my first ride!

I've been building my Marin for ages, finally got to the point where I can go for a spin and my chain snapped when I was out.

I'm thinking I didn't join it properly or a dodge cassette has done it.

It was skipping gears a bit, a problem I put down to not having the gears adjusted correctly

The cassette was used but the chain set and chain new.

Shall I just get a new cassette to be on the safe side?

Re:

Did it break at the joining pin?

If so, then the skipping may be due to the tight link, when pushed in, you need a chain tool with the second set of lugs that lets the pin to be pushed out a bit to loosen the link.

A worn cassette would usually jump on 1-3 middle grars as those tend to be the most used.

Re:

The chain didn't have a specific joining link... Or I made a mistake.

It does tend to jump in the middle of the range.

Re:

Not link, but joining pin. If you used non joining pin then that is asking for trouble, the ends of the pins are peened over to stop them coming out, you can see this on shimano chains as two horizontal lines.

Sounds like new cassette time.

Re:

Shimano. There is a black pin partly pushed into one side plate. This is used to join the chain.

All is not lost as you can, or used to be able to, buy shimano joining pins, they are longer with a pointed section that is then snaspped off,

Re:

Lovely bike. Lots more details please, wheels, gearset, forks, cranks, brakes who did the paint etc etc.? I'm interested because I've just dismantled a 1999 Mount Vision (you don't happen to know how to remove the swing arm/ frame pivot do you?) with the intention of a rebuild but not a showroom restoration.

Re:

Sure, although it's a bit of a mish mash of new and eBay parts.

I'd love to get it powder coated at some point, maybe in winter.

I've just picked up a new cassette and some chain pins from Merlin, just trying to motivate myself to do it!
