So wants the best way to get the old tyre off and clean the old glue off?

Pull it off. Worth looking to see if there is a less glued section. We used to do that opposite the valve. Scrape the old glue. Petrol is a good solvent.

I recently had the pleasure of de-glueing a pair of wheels.

A tooth brush, a pot of thinners and an old t shirt got the job done, but it was neither a quick or pleasant task.

I worked from spoke hole to spoke hole getting all the glue off.

If you try to do bigger sections you just end up with thinners and goo everywhere. :facepalm:
