Very Odd.

Went for a couple of rides on one I picked up, and it turned all taco on me. Darn it, brakes off, nearly tyre on frame taco.

Check over, its still in good condition, no strands broken and looks tidy. It hadn't been used for a few years so guessing things have just chilled and relaxed a bit.

Needed a spanner, so quick bit of filing and presto, have spanner.

Get to work on the wheel, and first thing you come across (obvious really) is how to you tell the tension on each nipple?
I usually play tunes, you can hear the pitch from each spoke. Thats out the window then! Only thing I can think is to feel the force on the nipple to turn.

Its also different to truing a std wheel, as small changes seem to have a bigger effect, but also seems easier to get a true wheel paradoxically :/

Any tips on a good way of gauging tension? How tight should it be? The metal discs through the webs turn while tensioing, guessing this is normal as I'm buggered if I can stop them turning. Is this right?

Cheers!

HI :P

This may sound a little odd but you have to turn the nipple with your spanner(i made one too) ,then a tinny bit more so you can move it back
Hope that makes sense, but be care full if it`s feeling a little floppy it`ll go out of dish quite quick so keep checking the centre, best to do it in a wheel jig but you can do it in frame, also check the bolts holding it on the hub.Mine came away(all of them)on a ride and that did very strande things to the wheel

You can feel the tightness of the kevlar, just give it a little prod ,,should be solid, hope this all helps

also obvious, if it reg goes outta true, then the cord either frayed or thinned somewhere. the last 1 I properly rode died like this. nowhere visible to repair, but could never keep tension!

Cheers for the comments guys.

Have been backing off 1/4 turn, good practice on any wheel ;) so should be good. Been prodding the kevlar, will use my calibrated engineering fingers to check tension, and check screws too.

Brake blocks and a vernier are the tools of my trade.

Just need to get one lap of MM out of it!
:D

Did you get yours sorted?

Having problems with my (formerly NOS) DD Pro. First ride came massively out of true - at least it was one nipple loosened off. Striaghtened it up and checked it over.
Took it out tonight. Had to stop five or six times to bring it straight again :? Even got overtaken by someone on a Halfords special who asked if 'I was OK'. Cheers mate.

One lap at MM is looking a big ask for mine. Remember riding one BITD which took a battering without problem (same config, same builder). Obviously time hasn't been kind to these wheels :x

Use mine for about 3 hours every sunday, and i`m not a easy rider, hit a tree twice, bent two rings(only a little) and my rear cones came loose

But the disc is still tight and straight, and mine has a piece of steel holding the kevlar together

Dont give up the hum of the disc is worth the greif

yeah, maybe it just a bad build. Will try and tension the whole disc and see how that goes. Only problem there is some of the nipples are really hard to turn....

If you don't think it can take a lap of Mayhem I'd fully strip and rebuild it John.

Mine and Jez' wheels took a hammering in the Peaks and only went out of true by 2-3mm max?

That said, I'm not sure I'm going to ride mine in anger this weekend :?
