Trouble with the kids of today

I have worked in a few call centres over the years, pretty crap job but have seen each year when u got new school leavers their attitude to work got worse, people perfectly capable of doing the job having total disrespect for it. they would muck around etc until they were shown the door. I always thought how on earth does that look on a cv. and when u hear them speak, reflects the dumbing down of tv.

It could be argued that the trouble with kids today are the parents of today, but I suppose that is a less fashionable way of looking at it.

Which Generation is bringing these kids up? Teaching them life's lessons?

It's hardly surprising in a country where people have been consistently living beyond their means and getting away with it that their children have high expectations for what they can get for minimal effort, is it?

i spend half my time teaching youths something they want to learn, the other half is spent dealing with unpleasant lttle angels with parents who dont care.........but still get the benefits of kids in full time education. some are spot on, most are turds.

who do we blame..........nobody

I interview for my employer from time to time for various roles and the standard is shocking. Decent candidates are a rarity.
Considering we are considered a fairly prestigious company with whom to pursue a career, the majority of applicants just don't make an effort. I think some of them turn up just so they can continue to claim job seeker's allowance (a la Spud in Trainspotting!)
The standard of English on CV's is appalling as well - degree educated applicants who can't spell and don't have a basic grasp of grammar - sorry - you are not being invited to an interview! At least use spell/grammar check - use the tools available!

(Steps off his soap box, dragged from an era when the basic skills such as maths and English counted for something!)

A whole generation of youngsters is not born lazy/feckless - (insert your own adjectives).

Behaviours and values are learned, copied and passed down from their parents and society.

Don't blame the young, pity them for the legacy they've had from the 40+ generations.

The weird thing is ... is now that I'm getting to the "old fart" stage in my working life I'm becoming like one of the feckless youths!

After spending 20 odd years trying to be the model employee (no time off turning up early, leaving late etc etc) and no really getting anything back for it. You sit there doing your job and the usual brown-nosing politico gets all the plaudits without actually doing any of the work...

So basically now I just do what I need to do to get through the day nothing more nothing less. I think what actually helped with this outlook was losing my job a while back and realising that your whole life doesn't come crashing down.

Hence the reason I'm writing this instead of doing my actual job. :D

Work is just a contract for services. If the employer treats you well then you should try hard to reciprocate. But if they don't then they can't expect you to work hard for them. Employers aren't doing you a favour employing you - they need you to help them make money, and you are not doing them a favour by working for them - you need them to make money. It's a business transaction.

Sadly, or not, depending on your views, the old ideas of paternalistic employers has all but vanished, particularly with large companies. As a self-employed business consultant before I retired I worked with hundreds of private and state organisations in the last 20 years and have seen things change a lot, and not always for the better.

I'm getting too cynical in my old age
