Trade: Red avid levers, canti for v.

So theyre not canti??

The brakes do feel soft and squishy yes (maybe dodgy cables?), no power until lever is at the bar.

I believe yours are canti lever. Avid SD 2.0

I believe the levers for V-brakes are Avid SD 2.0L (linear)

I believe the SD 2.0 that you have will work with V's or discs if you use the adjuster but not as well as the L model.

Sheldons explanation of how a Canti style brake lever will feel when used with a V brake (or disc) seems to be exactly as you describe you are feeling.

I can tell you that the 2.0L lever works very well with V's (I have some)

 I'm out.

If they were canti' levers you'd have power as soon as the pads hit the rim but it wouldn't increase due to the shorter 'pull' compared to a V;

The issue you have may be due to the fact that V's were shorter when they first came out so perhaps your levers don't work very efficiently with longer ones??

...but it could also be down to the cable outers or the pads??

Just 'lifted' from 'mtbr' :-

Avid Speed Dial 2.0 Brake Lever

Favorite Trail: Local Quarry
Duration Product Used: More than 3 years
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At: www.supercycles.co.uk
Strengths: When i first opened the box I drewled salivia - f'ing nice looking set of levers. I love the 'speed dial' so you can adjust the tension - something i thnk they patented. Oh and they also work damn fine...
Weaknesses: None really, except they work best with avid branded v-brakes.
Similar Products Used: nasty mushy plastic dia-compe
Bike Setup: 3 tube easton aluminium / 7005, rigid alu fork, avid brakes, deore / deore lx mix groupset, mavic, michelin tyres, (10kg complete bike)
Bottom Line: Great levers for the cash, i hope to have them on me bike for many more years to come

Ok I am back  To be honest dont take mtbr as gospel. Also lifted from there,

Bottom Line:

I use the SD 2.0 (not the L version) for the U-brake on the back of my GT, and for a Dia-Compe 737 up front. There is *just* enough pull to use these levers with V-brakes when they're on maximum pull, as long as you don't mind them a bit squishy. More squishy equals more control but closer pad clearance. I can live with it, but may upgrade to 2.0L later. The U-brake works fine with minimum pull, any more and there's not enough control for me.

I still maintain that you need the L version. You can pick them up for less than a tenner. If they work better great, if not, flog them on. You may find they work better and in a few months some red versions may crop up :D

Ok im pretty sure theyre dont have l written on them.

But, i do recall switching the bodies with another set that could have been L's :?

Looks like that could be the definitive answer then, he said, lobbing his towel through the ropes...

Chain Reaction used to sell a 'conversion kit' for the 2.0s consisting of two complete replacement levers - that should have given the game away as soon as I saw it
