I am curious, why do so many people want a Cunningham? Is it just because they are deemed desirable and so by default make into top ten lists??

I know there are some ultra rare British or European bikes that are held in the same level of esteem on the other side of the pond, but since they weren't popular here when I cut my MTB teeth they don't make it into my top 10, though I'm sure they are fine bikes. I have to imagine that Cunninghams were not very common over there, nor were they probably well known either. So why do people want them??

For me, I had the chance to get one and rode it and got to like it. So, when one better suited to me came up I made a play and now I have one that's perfect for me. But that's based on experience and not just a blind desire.

So???

For me it was the Man V horse V bike race decades ago that sparked my interest in Cunningham, my list is very grounded and not by any means an ultimate list.

But to answer your question, Marketing drove the whole caboodle, that fed it then, and is still feeding it now.

I would hope that at least some members list are based on curiosity, and the need to know what all the fuss is about. To say i havent a list of bikes id like to try/own etc beacuse ive tried them/had them/got them all, is ridiculous.

The Mantis, for me, is the one i would like to try in my size, and then hang it up for high days and holidays only, simply because everyone should have that one bike they cant stop looking at.

Re:

Not spent too long on this, but here's my wanted as of this minute.

Ritchey Frischy race replica
Morati 1.3, full Morati parts build
Mantis Valkyrie
Boulder Gazelle
RM Altitude
Ritchey Annapurna
Early Slingshot
Chance Ti
Santa Cruz Superlight
Salsa Ala Carte

How very conventional a list that is.

Sure, I understand. But wanting something just because everyone wants it is not the way I 'try' to approach things. I may want to try something if everyone is raving about it, but it's just interesting that they come up in so many people's top ten list while probably very few have ever even seen one. So, maybe it shouldn't be a surprise, I want a McLaren F1 and I've ever been near one and obviously haven't driven it. Maybe it's a bit like that.

Definitely that. Most listed are probably bikes that ppl haven't owned or ridden but want to for whatever reason. All the bikes I currently own and have owned are all bikes I bought because of pure want, having not ever ridden them before owning. There's only one bike that I own now that I've owned and ridden in the past, which got stolen and now I've replaced for sentimental reasons.

Same boat as you, I'd LOVE to own a McLaren F1, solely based on what I've what seen in pictures and videos.

Not a huge collection but I've had a lot over the years. I haven't tried/owned absolutely everything, but I'm down to mostly keepers based on their riding characteristics. Always room to learn and try more, but if we're talking a 'Top 10' list, my dance card is full. :)

Don't you need to actually ride a Manitou yet??

Ha! Too painful of an experience with mine. :P

I should probably do a list.

1) Muddy Fox
2) Kona
3) GT Karakoram
4) Alpinestars LX
5) Rocky Mountain
6) Schwinn PDG
7) Trek 8000
8 ) Gary Fisher HK
9) Specialized Hardrock
10) Off Road Toad
