This only seems to occur after you have bought something there. It might be worth asking around for anyone who has one of the offer vouchers that Machine Mart post.

You're correct sir. I bought a 15 quid small screw driver set, they took me into thier mailing list then obviously was notified of the vat free days. You can do the same simply by ordering thier book online

Until I decided to go walk about I used to work as a truck fitter and agree snap on is paying way over the odds for a box with a name

I used to use machine mart..keep an eye on them though as every now and again they have a vat free sale day..saved me a packet on this

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... ol-chest-r

I bought the top and bottom and yes in black and gold..lush

point to look out for..if you are going to buy one the chances are you will keep it and from time to time have quite heavy tools in it so whatever one you buy make sure the draws are multiball bearing slides..i.e. both sides have ball bearings to allow for heavier tools

the cheaper ones like the rac argos ones have just a slide like a kitchen draw..useless with heavy tools and over time are pants..the single ball bearing runners are okay but the difference in price between single and double rails is so small it's better to pay a bit extra for a box that you'll have for a time

on the tools some insist on snap on, I do have some trade needed tools that are snap one but the rest I bought from halfords professional range that replaces them free of charge should they fail..just keep the reciepts

Cheers sylus, I was an aircraft mechanic once upon a time and all we used was snap on, boxes are good but pricey. Rated the ratchets though and the range of sockets the black spanners are good too. Alas overkill for the home use. Also rate the Halfords stuff the screwdrivers are particularly good.

I'll register with MM and see if they mail me, until then the one I posted above is looking favourite. :) The less spent on the box the more spent on the man cave overhaul.

Machine mart are one of the most expensive tool shops ive ever been in  they're prices seem to be based upon the kind of false RRP with a discount that is still more expensive than and other :? im not just meaning online pricing,i mean in shops themselves.

This company is really good and dont usually stock poor quality products.

Take one cabinet, one length of worktop, one kestrel folding arm and a couple of hours and bingo-movable work station:

i find the roebuck tools are pretty good quality

not sure if you can get them though as theyre trade name i think, unless you know someone

not sure on price either or if they do a box

Of course your right Dyna on occasions machine mart maynot be the cheapest and on other occasions they can be.

Should I need to buy one I personally would have them in my back armoury for a new but search ebay using the distance from me part and see if I could buy second hand snap on for halfords money.

I like most I suspect, find the one I want..then spend endless days on the internet trying to find it much cheaper

Don't forget the local ads too..and gumtree

For tool boxes, Snap on, I can't fault them, just superb. They seem to be made out of thicker metal than the norm and don't seem to have sharp edges in corners, nor do the edges roll over when one chucks in a heavy tool.

I bought one ages ago, second hand for 500 when I was in the trade, I thought I was being a bit extravagant, that was until the depot was broken into and I learned a technique tool thieves use to get inside locked tool boxes, that technique was simply to push them off the bench where they hit the floor and under the weight of contents, they break open spilling their expensive guts everywhere for the thief to pick up. Not so the Snap On box though, it was pushed off, but it did not break open, nor could the obviously miffed thief get through the front flap lock, the hacksaw he used would not bite into the revolving sleeve shielding the lock. The box was replaced and used as an example of anti thief strength, and my new box, another second hand unit was then via the holes underneath, bolted through the work bench with coach bolts and nuts inside the box.

My box protected approximately £4000 worth of Snap On, Elora and Britool, to include diagnostic equipment and various other pricey trade related electronics and other test equipment.

Stupidly left it with what was to become the ex wife and lost the lot, and so there the end of my trade, as I could not afford to re equip.

But Snap on, as another said, their ratchetry is superb, but not all their stuff is the best, for even they source the best from others around the world. But where Snap On and a few other suppliers win, is the guarantee and service they provide via their operatives that buy in to the name, for a professional who depends on their toolery, a phone call can be the difference between completing a job and not completing it, and there the ability to pay weekly or monthly.

If one is not professional, they do not rely on their tools for their livelihood, then, although they are nice, it does not make economic sense to purchase Snap On, unless one is a names whore.

But their boxes, even for the amateur, I wholeheartedly recommend them, given my experiences, and even though I am no longer in the trade, I will, when I can afford it, start again with a Snap On box. Second hand of course, unless it seems other manufacturers of boxes have taken a leaf out of Snap On's approach to security, design and presentation.

No, just a person who has used their boxes and been very pleased with their performance, and believe me, I am very exacting with a good eye for practical detail and difficult to please.

Not all Snap On is good as I say, and they do trade on their good name whether that is warranted or not. But they have used Sandvik, Bahco and Facom that I know of. One sees those in the range, re badged, and one gets the real thing with the correct manufacturer badge and cheaper to boot.

But as said, if you don't rely on tools for your living, don't get Snap On.

Oh, and their ratchet screwdriver is excellent too, I sure miss that tool, oh, and the Sidewinder
