too good to be a doner bike?

I would say it is a well made 60's frame - 120 wide rear dropouts, above bracket gear cable guides, top tube brake cable loops, lack of bottle bosses, wide-ish clearances. Don't understand the brazed on gear lever bosses though? Perhaps added when resprayed?

Keep it as it is, perhaps post-date the gear levers, and it will be a nice machine.

is it ok with the 126 hub thats in there, even though its a 120 frame, was paniking about over stressing frame.........gear levers are seperates, though i agree very much later....shimano 600, will look for something a little more in keeping....

+1 for Old Ned's post. I would sort out that rear hub, it should be easy enough to get an axle suitable for 120mm as it's an old Italian hub. You might have to get the wheel re-dished as well but well worth it for that bike.

Your biggest problem is you'll have to get another donor!

Mark.

PS: Yes, get rid of the Shimano band-on gear levers and replace with Campag as you have a Campag rear mech. if you're being really picky you could get a period seat cluster bolt as well.

Just the axle. Nigel at www.Campyoldy.com has this listed for a fiver + P&P:

Record 5spd rear hollow q/r axle bare-130mm+/- long

You'll need to leave out some of the existing spacers when you re-assemble the hub and possibly re-dish the wheel as it might not be central in the frame afterwards. I've just had a back wheel fettled by Woodrups for £18 including re-dishing but keeping the original spokes.

wow, thats fantasic, i just assumed that it ment a new hub, but if only axle and redish....i will be very happy......just to confirm for future builds, can all 5-6 speed hubs be made to use 120 and 126 with the right axle?

it might be that you dont even have to do that. If you can take 3mm worth of spacers out of each side (freewheel needs to clear the dropout), then you shoulldnt need to redish and then saw/file a bit off the end of the axle, its cost you nowt.

Especially as you're running a 5-speed block anyway. Generally speaking (and particularly for Campagnolo), the body width of 5 and 6 is the same, it's only different width spacers that make the difference. I've altered a few recently.

It won't actually be a problem running a 126 in a 120 gap. It won't stress the frame.

Nice looking bike though. Oozes quality the more you look at it, so I wouldn't break it up.

i have notice a 3mm spacer either side on the axle, if i take this out i will have my 120mm gap..........question: does there need to be a spacer of some sort or can i run without any and just have the cone and lock nut? currently the spacer is between the locknut and the cone.
