Remove stabilizers, find nice flat surface. Hold on to the back of the saddle to support them initially. Once they are going fast enough that the giroscopic effect holds them up remove your hand, but for christ sake don't tell them you are doing so as it starts them pannicking. When we tried this with my son he had gone about 50m first time on his own, but fell when he looked round and realised I wasn't right next to him
Took about 30mins to get him confident, he rides out with me now at a leisurely pace :D

Yup.

I did this with my eldest lad.

He hadn't got any balance at all, but I decided at the age of 7 that enough was enough. Stabilisers off. 30 mins of patience in the garden and job done! Now he rides off kerbs, down steps and off roads on footpaths with me no problem 8)

wasnt there a thread on here recently about this? something about rokcing back and forth for momentum? some help i cant remember!!!

i didn't learn to ride a bike until i was nearly 7, i remember my older sis telling me to pedal in complete rotations, and me telling her to go away (i have always wanted to do things my way when im ready)

i have twin daughters....the first did it very quickly after i took the stabilisers off...just walked with her pretending i was holding the seat...that worked...second daughter not so trusting"hweheh"so i just dragged her screaming down the nearest allyway on her bike till she did it....took about 5 min...sometimes ya gotta be cruel.... :P
