Time for a modern bike classifieds section?

Suggest it goes in the General Classified - after all if hifi stuff, computers, rooms to let etc. can be advertised there why not modern bike stuff?

Modern classifieds section is somewhat against the ethos of this site :?

Yeah, but. . . I would think a large percentage of the sites members have their feet on pedals of a retro and modern nature...

And what about neo-retro??
And all the bikes in 98-on??

This site has built a great community, and these things tend to evolve a tad over time (and membership count).. to force existing members to go elsewhere just because they also have a modern bike is a tad unwise imo.

Sounds a good idea to me...we can advertise our PC's, Hi-Fi, cars etc so why not modern bikes/parts in a seperate section.
Sure, you can list these items in plenty of other forums but if I were looking to buy, there are plenty of people here I would totally trust for their description, fast shipping etc etc etc over Norman No Idea elsewhere...so why not?

Very true! 8)

I also agree a modern classified section would be a good idea?using common sense as the method to determine 'retro'

This is now a very busy forum and you are simply going to get 'modern' parts come up for sale.

what happen if you have a retro frame with modern parts?

I've seen a good number of forums lose their niche ( lets say pre 50s cars ) as the core members post stuff that is similar ( lets say a 60s model ) that inevitably attracts others that like the atmosphere but are only interested in the other stuff . What starts as a guy getting a 60s era car and is just showing his mates suddenly ends up a 60s era car site , the old guys with their 50s cars stop bothering as there is more and more stuff they aren't interested in . It turns into " hey , he could show that so why can't I show this ? "

If you dilute the place too much then it loses the point it existed in the first place . A good example is the classic ford show , it was great years ago because funnily enough it was all classic fords  but there was always one or two sierras that nobody really minded on the basis of " well the guy is part way through finishing his mega works escort " . I didn't bother going this year , sick of seeing cosworths and mk4 escorts and not seeing the actual classic fords that I know are out there but no longer see the point in going .

Basically you have to remember why your here in the first place , old bikes . It's not strict here but it would be a shame if the majority turned into 2005+ ponies

I firmly believe that it's the rider whos retro and not the bike but come on chaps the internet is a very big place , there are more suitable places to sell the new stuff .

I don't like change!

Do what you like, I'll only ignore it anyway.

My dear old dad used to say "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" So I shot him!!

al

And also places to post pics of 98-on bikes, sell non-cycling gear etc. etc. where would you draw the line?

It will make little difference to me, ultimately, I just think that to block the selling of non-retro parts here would be a big ol' mistake.

The policing of a modern classified would be problematic though.. imo.. already there's road stuff in MTB sections..

It's just my thoughts.. nothing more ;)

I don't mind the odd stuff here and there but having an area specifically to sell the newer stuff to me is like shouting to the interweb " hey , come all ye who have anything on two wheels , sell it here we don't mind "

It doesn't affect me at all really as I just don't look at stuff that might not be of interest but I'm very mindful that I don't pay anything to be here ( and I'm kind of thankful of that ) but someone is footing the bill for this place and I'd like to think that given the name of the site they had a good idea of what the place would be about . Offering a place to sell stuff somewhere that ranks highly on google search's ( say someone posts about their 2003 xyz , someone else searching for info on a 2003 xyz would see retrobike almost certainly on the first couple of pages ) I just don't want an sudden influx of people who don't actually care about old bikes all that much seeing somewhere to sell their stuff for free and clogging up all the nice bandwidth and moderators time . There will be plenty of " massiveballs2056 sold me a 2004 xyx and it was broken , what are you going to do about it ?" questions .
