Now I usually undo the barrel adjuster and it's a really easy job. However the barrel adjuster is stuck/rusted in place and I had the devils own job trying yesterday, even resorting to a complicated system of dental floss and pulleys without luck.

Any suggestions or tips?

Actually I never remove the barrel adjuster  Bend the cable end a little and rotate it inwards?

put some cable through from the other way and tape it end to end to the new cable pull really gently it will come through but cant say ive ever taken the adjuster out just bend it a little like already suggested.

click the shifter so its in first not eighth, pull the cable completly through the hole, then you have a straight run through the adjuster

Think thats right, aight done it for 10 years

:D

Thanks guys, always interesting to see that there are different ways to achieve the same end although my technique is clearly lacking!

A steady hand and a pure heart should see me to my goal (or falling that some robust language and a hammer may suffice).

I find that to be a most reassuringly satisfying approach to many tasks, if not always a particularly successful one. :)

Always start with a few quality beers before you slide the process into the gutter of rage and despair. That way, tomorrow, you won't remember anything that happened and you can use the old "I was just riding along" excuse when you have to ask for help!
