I bought a Klein Rascal and spent heaps buying parts etc for it. went to put it together and the rear mech hanger is badly cross threaded. It is not replaceable

Please tell me there is something I can do

I have a dropout frame tap if thats any help... you could borrow it for the cost of postage both ways... :) :) although it may be cheaper for you just to buy one , if your in NZ..

You used to be able to buy a part that slotted into the mech hanger from behind with threads (I think you had to drill the hanger out very slightly)
Wouldn't know where to get one though - you might have to trawl through a few MTB retail sites

thanks - i'm just hoping there is something i can do to fix it. I cant afford to write it off. I got it off ebay and the damage wasnt mentioned in the description

i'm gutted, simply gutted

Thanks for the offer Si - i'm going to take it to the lbs to see if they can help

You could drill it out and helicoil the dropout , if its beyond repair fella.. I'll see if I can find you a link for a kit... easy to do ...

before you drill it out first try to mount a steel der hanger bolt from the back side of the hanger. usually there are a few intact threads left and you may be able to "re-thread" the rest of them. use alot of grease and bolt it in slowly and unthread the bolt regularly. i've managed to save aluminum hangers that way. better would be to use a tap from the backside but a steel bolt works as well if you are careful. and you have it right at hand if you take it out of the rear der you wanted to mount.

if that fails you can either use the saver mentioned above or a helicoil insert. latter would deffo be a job for a shop as you need the special tools. but it's not lost!
