The where did it all go wrong thread

Don't think Raleigh was every anywhere with MTB's, they did have their Special Product Division, and made some very good bikes under they Dyna-tech & M-Trax brand, but both these went in the late 90's, M-Trax has come around again, and was junk, what happens under Accel is to be seen.

Diamond Back are another.

Last I heard Diamond Back were owned by the same Dutch company that also owns the Raleigh name. One of my LBS's is still a Raleigh dealer and had a few DB's in store the last time i was there. There wasn't much difference between them and the Raleigh's tbh. Both low end made in China affairs with only paint jobs and stickers differentiating them

Re:

Do haro still make mtbs? I had a haro ex-1 in 2005 before it got stolen. I know they date from well before that.
I haven't seen any lately except for BMXs

Re:

Most of the 'what happened' is the company couldn't make money or the owner wanted to move on and sold the brand and many in reality a brand name.

Sports Direct is full of Brand Names but not the original brand.

Don't blame them unless it was a hostile take over, blame the original owners for not making money or just wanting to get out and do something else.

That's where many have gone.

Pace suspension forks.

No place for them on this list IMO, regardless of what went on internally. They were producing great forks right up until they sold to DT Swiss, who then continued the good work. My old Pace based 2012 DT Swiss XMM's were the best forks I had ever had up until my current Pikes.

Re:

For it to qualify as a true BSO the forks should be 'set up' backwards. I did a 'work experience' stint fairly recently at local bike recycling operation and saw no end of these heaps of shit come through the door for scrapping.

Raleigh USA did well in NA with their Techniums. Had a halo bike and decent spec'd range. Rode a Chill in 91. Have one in the fleet now. Decent bike. Not the lightest, but it's standard 71/73 and goes where you point it. Race on Sunday. sell on Monday works when you have a rider in a striped jersey at the front of the pack, too. Everyone turned their head and looked when they heard that rear wheel.

What about Schwinn - they used to make some lovely bikes especially the Homegrowns?

Same company as GT post-93. Went under in around 2001 and was bought out. Now same parent as Mongoose, Cannondale, Iron Horse & Sugoi [Dorel Industries].

The original works still continues as Waterford: http://waterfordbikes.com/w/
Schwinn have been through a few attempted resurrections of the brand, but still have that difficult Raleigh-type thing of having been the 'everyman' brand so it's difficult for them to make an impact.
