This always happens when I have the garage door up, and my garage is converted into a workshop with a lot of woodworking tools. They always have a good look as they trawl past before I can get to the door.

Oddly, when I was at work once, my desk overlooked a large car park with big steel gated height restrictors over the entrance. A flat bed transit rolled up and three guys with a petrol grinder began cutting down the high level steel gates. H&S practice was none-existant as one guy teetered on the sideboards of the van wielding the grinder while his mates stood on tiptoes holding the gates. Cars were driving in and out under this as it was going on.
I called the police but no-one knew anything or wanted to react. The council likewise, no one had any knowledge of who, what or which department. I took photos which I offered to the site security afterwards but again they never retured the call. Van was unmarked so I presume it was theft.

One thing I don't really understand - I've seen (at least I think I have) these people in their pick-ups, driving 'round, but I've never seen them (more really, how they behave) on other peoples' property.

Do they just wander up, and would they likely go into garages, in broad daylight - are they that bold?

How do they behave when challenged? Do they act like they're up to no good, or just spout a load of blag?

I was in halfords once and some of "them" came in. Just walked up to the tool display, took what they wanted and walked out. The Manager said it was more trouble a) calling the police, and b) trouble in store if they came back for him!

There are at least 3 'scrappies' that drive around our estate. One came past this morning at 8.15

Who on earth is going to donate scrap metal at 8.15? Most likely he and his mate were scoping peoples garages as they got their cars out.

I'm going to beef up garage security as all the 'precious things' are in there!

I live in a cul-de-sac and we have tatters coming up and down the road at least once a day in their flatbeds, useful if your getting rid of rubbish but wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

I can't believe that the "vehicles" they are driving are roadworthy, but I've got a big dog that barks when they stop anywhere near so never bother us too much.

They all seem to have a dodgy look to them though.

its them damn mullets! whoever thought they looked eveny remotely decent/good!

Yes they are that bold! I had some things stolen a couple of years ago from the back garden. They were challenged by a neighbour but they simply brushed it off and said I had arranged them to come and take some scrap from the back and went ahead. Police didn't want to know unless there was some CCTV evidence, nevermind that I could identify my alloys at the local scrap. Anyway, I know have my own CCTV set up front and back on 27/7 record
