If no-one else ia genuinly available i'd contemplate looking into doing it on a relaxed level..

Check the date of the post, no one is interested in it. Your doing it on a relaxed level is more than anyone else is doing at the moment. There's nothing to say you can't co-ordinate remotely. Seriously, have a chat with Green Rabbit, he's a nice guy, I'm sure you could help giving the events some publicity, PMing people and the like without having to go to them all.

What have you got to loose? If it's too much stand down and someone else can pick up the gauntlet.

In terms of emailing or PMing each and every member every time there is a ride; sadly it's so time consuming as to be totally impractical. We've tried.

Not only would you have to search through nearly 12,000 members to find their location, which is only occasionally accurate, you'd then have to copy and paste the same blurb however many times it takes to send a message to each of them.
As I say; totally unworkable.

The current arrangement simply requires members to have a look in the relevant area thread to find out what's going on.
In the North West area we've been lucky in that there are lots of people who want to get out riding and a well organised AEC and Deputy who put in alot of time and effort behind the scenes into making it work.
I'm fairly confident that it's pretty easy to find out when organised rides take place in the NW, and I'd like to think that we're open to suggestions too.

For the first 'prototype' year of an organised RetroBike rides calendar I think that most agree it's been pretty successful.

Apologies for taking this 'Off Topic' thread further off topic though.

A few points to make from a mobile phone:

If you think posts counts are important you are wrong.

If you think forum members stride around the forum with impunity, you are wrong.

Attending as many meets as you can means that you all can integrate better. I've yet to meet a member who wasnt a nice person.

I am only human and will always react when continually pushed into a corner and poked at until I can stand no more. I eat, poo and breathe this site and am greatful for what it has given me. I promote it where I can to the point of being boring. I dont appreciate threads started about me by people who dont have the billiards to pm or email me directly.

Quite...

Anyway, as for directly PMing every member, I agree that wouldnt be practical. But what about if a sweeping email calendar went out to all members, or updated ride details for example?

If upon enrolment to this site location details (by postcode perhaps) and email details were absolute requirements, then would it not be easy to set up blanket emails?
Im not sure how the backstage elements work, but I imagine it could be done.

Sweeping emails have been done before and was not well received by some members http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65272
Also, I don't know what John's policy would be on letting AEC's have access on to every members email address?

When I was Anglian AEC I pm'd every member in the area inviting them to our meet at the end of January this year. Found out the member names by looking at the google map pages. Over 300 pm's were sent with very few replies and most of them sat in my outbox for a long time before I deleted them. We did have a record turnout for the ride but only a few were directly prompted to attend from my efforts. Was worth doing it even if only one member came out as a result.

AEC & the deputys have a hard job to do and we all should support them if we can

Then perhaps something as simple as this when you join/sign up:

We would love you to join in on Retro rides with your fellow members in your area. This is a great way to get to know other members with similar interests etc etc. If you would like to be emailed/contacted from time to time with such requests please tick here * and leave your contact details & location here *

And dont forget to browse the AREA MEETS section to find other organised rides in your area.

Spoken like a true deputy AEC. Put yourself forward yet?

PM Sinnett177. He will be the National Events Coordinator next year so he'll be able to give you a pretty good idea of what's involved.
