Down badging a high end bike as a low end one to make it less desirable to thieves.

I think most bike thieves are opportunists and will take a shiny BSO over
something 'old'.

De-badging is fine, but I assumed this was about going up the ladder. As mentioned earlier, it does make me think of BMW's. De-badging a 3 Series doesn't make me think "Wow, a 330!" - it's most likely going to be a 316i driven by someone with a complex.

in black masking tape to make it less desirable to thieves.
