Indurain TT bikes

Wasn't it so, BITD, you could judge and take bets who would come out on top of a major stage race with how much extra lard they were carrying from day one?

Probably those photo's from the prologue. Oh dear ..... remembering prologues fondly.

I remember my first Tour stage, the early team time trial and I was lucky enough to get a pass into the riders village. So I'm stood next to Laurent Fignon, and let's say he'd been on the tartes au pommes and the duck lard all winter. He was probably about 95kg... I was thinking 'mate , you've really let it go...'!

Three weeks later I saw him on the final leg into Paris, and he had easy shed 20kg. They say on the Tour you're putting out in excess of 10,000 cals a day of expenditure. The most the body can really process is about 4000 a day. You shit and piss the excess.

I'm not really sure what effective difference weight (gain or loss) has on overall performance. But it's a fact that Tour riders like to go into it a little bit 'over', it's a long way 4000km on a bike, at very high intensity, with almost no let up. I've no idea how they do it, day after day, after dayr. I'm really in awe of all stage racers, at whatever level.

He is carrying a fair bit of timber there .. Fair play. Reminds me of late season '10' outside of Newcastle back in the day. Raining all the way out, blustery and wet all the way back. This lets say 'well made' gentleman tumbles off his bike after a very respectable high 23'. To a round of applause , upon which he immediately reaches into his back pocket, whips out a lighter and a fag and starts puffing away!

Happy days 😲😂
