Tell me about retro Race Face

About the machined Deus stems, I have a fw of those, includign one on my Dekerf (sort of correct it is a '99). They pop up regularly on e-bay and go for reasonable prices. E-bay Germany is also a good place for them.

Enjoy!!

Here a Ti example fitted >>

In this one a steel bolt used for the assembly that goes into the steerer, but normally the Ti stem should have a black lightweight aluminium bolt fitted.

The post in this bike is a XY. Not very happy with the RF setup for this bike, as something bling CNC would have been more appropriate. It is a carbon/al FS downhill rig. HBall raced it with Ringle equipment down the mountain. The RF does great on, especially Canadian, high end steel racers.

For my latest build I used a cromo EX stem. Because the black matched better with the black frame. It is a quality steel frame. No pics yet.

I really like those Deus stems, the first gen ones as pictured above, they just seem really well made, and are now very good vfm (they were over £100 iirc). I also quite like their headsets, the real seal is well made (and sealed for UK weather) and the Thermo SP is pretty cool too, although has a high stack height for an aheadset.

I have a black NOS Real Seal available if you are interested btw, and a steel RF BB (or two!) plus some grips ;)

Air alloy bars are light and well made too, although not that wide.

Oh, and you also need to keep an eye out for the top caps they did in about ten variations - some people on here collect them it appears.

I think the Deus stem is a little new school. I remember the XY post and System stem were very popular stuff until Thomson took over.

I have decided the component choice for my Dekerf should be heavily Canadian led.....not that keen on Syncros so that leaves Race Face.
But what should I be looking for? Circa 1995 stuff btw and polished
Crankset; LP Turbines....where do I-Beams sit in the bling-o-meter?
Stem: Dues?
Post: XY?
Headset: Are RF any good or stick with CK?
Think thats it isn't it?

If you have any on your bike...lets be having a look at them please

Cheers

Carl

The I Beam cranks were DH, I think, and fugly compared to the LP Turbines.

The I beams are the original and most desirable and rare, a bit like Kookas in they are purely machined and not forged/machined like Turbines.
I Beams are non lo pro and use a 122.5 BB, while Turbines use a 113

I still use Turbines on my modern bikes,

The Real Seal headset is second to none, the one I have is without fault! If someone has a blue one spare i'd love to know.

If their headsets are anything like their BB's, they're well worth having.
oh, and I've just bought my fourth set of turbine cranks on Ebay (excluding the ones I busted).
What's the colour scheme , Carl?

It partly depends on whether you're going for a silver build or black, but I think in the final analysis you've got to mix and match with RaceFace and Syncros, because a black Syncros stem is too big and crude looking for a nice frame like that, but then a RaceFace XY post is also ugly and not a patch on a Syncros.

I have a silver/grey Thermo SP headset which is excellent and looks great, and a black SyStem on another bike which is slightly heavy (220g for 125mm) but looks good and does the business. Deus are good and a lot lighter, but they didn't make them back in the 90s.

Turbines are obviously going to be great on it, RaceFace bars are good too - why not all RaceFace except a Syncros post?

Well I went fugly on the stem in the end and modern Syncros for post :? mainly because I'm fed up of it sitting here and want to ride it

It will more than likely change again in the near future but I want it built for the weekend so its a bit of a compromise at the moment  although I must admit the fugly stem is growing on me

The whole bike looks very very nice...and I think the stem is fine too.
Damn shame I missed forks like those on Ebay recently...or are they the ones
