Tell me about retro Race Face

Well I went fugly on the stem in the end and modern Syncros for post :? mainly because I'm fed up of it sitting here and want to ride it
It will more than likely change again in the near future but I want it built for the weekend so its a bit of a compromise at the moment  although I must admit the fugly stem is growing on me
Interesting juxtaposition of the brute stem and the pretty headset there.

Is it just me, or do others share the feeling that a silver Syncros stem doesn't look anything like as brutal?

does anyone know if there's a way to pull out the old sealed cartridge bearing in a Real Seal and put in a new one? i picked up one 2nd hand, and the top bearing is smooth, but the bottom is a bit gritty.

also need a new o-ring seal for the top as the existing one is still intact but cracking. anyway to source that?

Bearings are available via RaceFace dealers, don't know about seals.

I failed to drift the existing bearing out of my Thermo because I couldn't get at it. I took it to my excellent LBS, Rayment Cycles, thinking maybe they'd got some weird tool to do the job, but no, he had to drill it to bits to get it out. Didn't take him long though. Could have done it that way myself I guess, but he's way more skilful than me.

this early Deus CNC'd stem is a thing of beauty, i own one in white that's on my ETSX-70. i'd love to find a unpainted one.

Guess what I have sitting in my parts bin! :D Maybe you have something to trade?[/img]

I stumbled across this site in the UK for bearing and seals
http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/

(it was nothing bike related, but for my school :()

They have seals/orings that sell in packs of 10 and 50 for cheaper than a single alleged headset specific ring. ;)

I have just bought from these guys. Helpful and fast, plus very reasonable prices for the higher quality bearings.

but how does one get the sealed bearing cartridge out? it seems to be press fitted into the cup. should i even be considering pulling it out?

also anyone know what gen this stem is. looks to be about the same as the silver one i posted, but the base of the stem is machined different, as well as the graphics on it.
