Finally getting around to this :D Ive been in need of something since the last one blew up and ive been using a borrowed 26"

After much deliberation and trying to avoid the 'standard' £500 Xmas released model, which always seems to lack all the features of others in the same range.

Finally decided on the Sony KDL42W653
Then discovered John Lewis with their standard 5 year guarantee doesnt do that one in 42" just the 32" :( Bums

What do they have ? The comparison price wise is the Panasonic TX-L42E6B
Like the Sony the Panasonic tests out very well with the Sony haveing the edge here and there. One or two points i need to be aware of but overall the quality is very similar.

Tough one :?

Does anyone have either of these two and if so how are you finding it ? Im not too clued up on all the intricacies of the tech in TV's. It would mainly be for Movies, fast moving motor sport, general movie viewing and possibly gaming.
On the gaming side the input lag on the Sony is near non existent.
The 2 tests ive looked at are here-
SONY

PANASONIC

I'd be happy to forgo the JL guarantee if the Sony came out better.

Neither have very involved video processing - it's the frame storage which causes lag. Personally I'd pick the Panasonic every time; Sony are far from what they used to be.

As a better alternative for fast action, see if you can bag one of the last Panasonic plasmas which are still way better for fast motion than any LCD. Avoid the X6 though as it has a lower-spec display. Richer Sounds have the ST60 at £599 if you can run. You have to be quick, Panasonic just stopped making plasma sadly. I bought one recently, it's the last chance...and I work in the industry.

Re:

I have 2 32" Sony 653's and can safely say they are very good. Even compared to my range topping 46" Sony HX923 the picture is very good. The networking features are very handy if you are into that sort of thing.

Only thing that may be initially disappointing is the sound but let it run in for a couple of days and it sounds much better. Leaving it on when you go out speeds up things with running in the speakers.

Re:

Plasmas all the way for me, though I would point out most of the differences laboured over by the test geeks are not evident in day to day viewing.

Panasonic have been churning out amazing plasmas lately, shame they are leaving that arena. I wouldn't even consider alternatives if not forced.

I reckon the latest Sony LED sets look ace, just hunt for the best price for the models you like the look of. AVForums is good for general recommendations as well as the likes of HDTVTest. Wouldn't worry too much about the sound out of the box either, yes Sony are weak generally in that area but most people resort to external sound setups anyway. I am not bothered by 3D either, but if you are the active systems knock seven bells out of the passive.

Seen great reviews of the Sony mentioned, but there is a new one out at similar price point as well as the likes of the KDL42W805 available from John Lewis for just a little more.

Re:

Yes that Panasonic. I bought one from JL back before xmas for in law.
Its a lovely looking thing and compared to my older 2010 37" freesathd/freeview Panasonic TV...

It much wider in its colours from darks too whites. The screens not as good with the side angles but were talking wide angles here and I don't think that'll be a problem for what you want to use it for.

Though I have no idea for movies and going, not my thing on a big screen. Booth work well with the Wii and kids DVD.

Panasonic are rumoured they may bring the freesat version of youview aka freetime to these which is pretty good. Of course I'll be for free view on this TV if they do.

No idea what the apps are like but the interface is a not slow as it is at the moment.

I prefer it too the two smaller screen Sony's I have access too.

Pop to RicherSounds get them to setup both in their show room.
They price match etc too.

I would go the Panasonic as I like them. But they don't do a freesat/freeview version.

I went for a Sony 46 w8 happy so far.

I've gone from a 400w plasma to a 66w led backlit so hopefully spending less too.

Don't get hung up on sound - they are all shite compared to a simple amp/ small speaker/ sub set up. Most new models talk to other brands / equipment over hdmi or Bluetooth / nfc. Mine can chat to the laptop and pc for wireless streaming of music / video.

DVD looks cack on new screens compared to bluray so you'll be replacing all your current collection

Currently looking at a couple of options for a conservatory TV, so going non plasma for a change. Sony at the top of the list so far!

Re:

Plasma use far more leccy than LED if that is a factor to consider. Sony are good but you pay more for the brand name. Panasonic are great for the money and easily equal the Sony. I work in the industry too and I can tell you what I know...surprisingly Samsung seem to offer the best all round picture quality. At work all of our TV gallery monitors are Samsung (about 40 monitors per gallery) and these were chosen after testing on all brands regardless of cost. I have to Samsung TV's at home and can't fault them.

...just my 2 penneth!
