TDC Headset

Dirt Disciple
Morning All,
I have here a TDC headset that came off my claude butler corridor (1968). I think that it’s missing a locking nut but I’m not 100% sure. I have also had a look on classic lightweights but it doesn’t look like the TDC headsets on there.
There isn’t anything on velobase

Does anyone have any ideas. If you need specific details to help then let me know because as you can see I haven’t cleaned it up yet.

I suppose that leads onto my next question. Does anyone have a spare locknut or any other bits I’m missing kicking around a box in the shed?
cheers
Wil

IIRCit should have a locknut and a washer (with a lug on it to fit into a groove in the fork column if needed).......

It looks to me as if it is a mis-matched set. The 'domed' bottom frame race looks like one of their 'Italia' models (a sort of Campagnolo Gran Sport look-a-like) but the top race doesn't look as if it matches.

Here are illustrations of Campag and TDC headsets, the Italia is mentioned.

Are you thinking of re-using it? TBH, it looks a bit 'well used' to me but may be OK after a good clean.

thanks for that.
I was thinking of re using it if it cleaned up ok. The only identifying marks I ccould find was the TDC right on the top. You might be right about the mis match as the cups dont' look anything like I could find for TDC.

FYI The balls were loose rather than in a cage like the campag model.
cheers
Wilf.

Loose balls would be normal for virtually anything other than Campag in those days. In some respects they are better as you can get more bearing surfaces per race.

Here is the TDC headset on my '58 Constellation if thats any help...

That's a TDC Continental 'S' Type on Spokesman's Carlton I think?
According to Classic Lightweights anyway.

Here's mine next to a 70s Campag Gran Sport for comparison.
I wanted to use it on my Rotrax but the stack height is pretty high, so saving it for another project.
I gave up finding a '50s Campagnolo Pista model, the GS is a good substitute, at only 33 - 34mm high.
